Un Build Assembly

to unbuild an assembly item, bring up the build assembly screen, use the back arrow top left to cycle back to the build you want to delete, use menu edit>delete build when that build is on screen.

all parts used in the assembly item BOM will return to stock

This sounds wonderfully simple, but where is there a menu tab in the build assembly window?

Thank you for that great answer, @Rustler!

Hey @QuBouser1!

The Edit menu that Rustler is referring to is the one between File and View. You can also press Ctrl + to delete the assembly you opened. I made you a screenshot for visual reference.

QuickBooks Desktop has in-product articles that you can use as reference in the future. Just press F1 to launch the Help window and search for something like delete build assembly item. This will give you an article about deleting a built assembly.

Feel free to post again if you need help.

Un Build Assembly

How can I delete a Build Assembly that is pending from last year.  Our QuickBooks has been closed by the accountant, but I have a Building Assembly still pending with the date 12/07/2018.  I am unable to delete because the books are closed.  I can not just close this Build Assembly because it requires full access to Edit Closed Transactions (which I think means that I would need permission to "unclose" the books from 2018.  Do you have any suggestions how we can move forward with this un Build Assembly?

Thanks for sharing on-point details about your concern, @dmckinny

Yes, you'll need to ask permission from your accountant to unclose the books for 2018. This way, you can delete the pending build assembly item by performing the steps provided by Rustler above.

Before doing it, please first make sure to create a backup of your company file. Once deleted, you can close your 2018 books in the program. Since the deleted build assembly item is pending and it's a non-posting transaction, it doesn't affect the quantity on hand of components and assembly items for last year.

For more information, you can check out this helpful article: Create, Build, and Work With Inventory Assembly Items

This will get you in the right direction, @dmckinny

I'll be right here to help if there's anything else you need. Have a great day.

Can you unbuild some but not all of the assemblies that were built at once?  We built 7 of a certain item, then the customer returned one of them and we want to unbuild one and put the components back into stock.

Hi there, @GlassDale.

Currently, there isn't a way to delete an assembly if they were created all at once. But I have a workaround you can consider.

A workaround you can consider is to create an adjustment. This way, you can add the stocks back to your inventory. But before this, you’ll need to take note of the components of your assembly.

You can follow the steps in recording the adjustment:

  1. Click on Inventory from the menu bar.
  2. Choose Adjust Quantity/Value on Hand.
  3. Choose the Adjustment Account.
  4. In the Item column, enter the assembly.
  5. Enter the New Quantity. The number should show a decrease in your assemblies.
  6. In the other rows, enter the components of the assembly.
  7. Enter the New Quantity of the components. The number should show an increase in your items.
  8. Click on Save and Close.

You can refer to this article for more information: Adjust Inventory Quantity or Value.

You can always tag me in your comment if you have any other questions. I’d be glad to help you.

Thanks for the reply and work around, @Alessandra_B.  It's hard to understand how QB doesn't have a simple Unbuild Assembly facility.  My old software (Sage by Peachtree) had one for at least 10 years.  It's even harder to understand how, when I make an inventory adjustment for an assembly the components aren't returned to stock automatically.  Sigh 😿.

Hey there, GlassDale.

Allow me to take over and help you with unbuilding certain items from the assembly in QuickBooks Desktop.

To unbuild certain items, you can edit the Quantity when from the build assemblyThis way, the components are returned and stock automatically.

Here's how:

  1. Click Inventory at the top menu bar then click Build Assemblies.
  2. Locate the assemblies you've created and edit the Quantity to Build.
  3. Click Build and Close.

I looked at doing this, and to me it appeared that I'd be building additional assemblies instead of reducing the number previously built  (in this case, it looks like I'd be building an additional 6 units instead of reducing the 7 down to 6.)
Also, is there an easy way to find assembly builds?  I can't find a search facility, so all I can do is scroll through all the previous builds to find the one I want.

Thanks for your input - I'm going to try doing it this way.

Edit: I tried it, and it worked.  Thanks again.

I found the answer to how to find specific assembly builds here: https://www.newquickbooks.com . It worked! (In case the link is broken, from the edit menu click on "find". In the window that comes up, select the "advanced" tab, and under filter choose "transaction type". For the transaction type, choose "build assembly" (all the way at the bottom of the list). Then click on the "find" button to get a list of builds, find the one you want, and double click to open it.

Hi,

If you don't mind, is there any way I can just edit the "ITEM"? For the example image above, I've mistakenly used "Coffee Beans" where the correct item is "Coffee". I hope this makes sense. Thank you in advance.

Thanks for joining the thread, ejoyce_00.

There is, indeed. I'll show you how to replace an incorrect item in your build assembly.

Here's how:

  1. Go to the Lists menu, then the Item list.
  2. Locate the specific inventory assembly item, then select Edit item from the Item dropdown.
  3. In the Edit item screen, go to the Bill of Materials section and then change the component item.
  4. Once done, hit OK.

I'm also adding this article for future reference to guide you in adjusting inventory for finished goods: Adjust your inventory of finished goods.

We're always here to help you if you need anything else. Have a great day.

Thank you!

Is it also possible to change the INVENTORY PART of an Assembly already built? For example, the correct inventory part should be "COFFEE" not "COFFEE BEANS"? Again, thank you in advanceCoffee.JPG
