Thanks for joining the Community, DocPop.

When you see an Unrecoverable Error, it means QuickBooks closed unexpectedly.

Here's a list of known reasons this can occur:

  • Open or close a file
  • Save a copy (backup or portable copy)
  • Select any menu option, button or link
  • Update QuickBooks (program or payroll updates)
  • Run file utilities (verify, rebuild, or condense)

Initially, you'll want to update your books to their latest release and create a backup of the company file you're working with. After you've finished, you can try opening QuickBooks with all windows closed. QuickBooks re-opens any windows left open when you close your company file. If you have a large report or several windows set to open automatically, it's possible you may encounter an unrecoverable error on startup.

First, you'll want to try using a different QuickBooks user.

Here's how:

  1. In the top menu bar, go to Company, Set Up Users and Passwords, then Set Up Users.
  2. Click Add User..., type a username and password, and hit Next. Be sure not to use the damaged user name.
  3. Customize your user as necessary, then select Finish.
  4. Go to File, then choose Close Company/Logoff.
  5. Try logging in to the company file using your new login credentials.

If the new user works, delete the user you're having problems with and re-create them afterwards. In the event it doesn't fix your error, you'll want to try creating a new Windows Admin next.

If you're encountering an unrecoverable error while opening your file as an admin user, try running our QuickBooks File Doctor utility.

I've also included a detailed resource about troubleshooting unrecoverable errors which may come in handy moving forward: Unrecoverable Error when opening company files on workstations

Please don't hesitate to send a reply if there's any additional questions. Have a lovely day!

On Windows 11 home, QB Desktop Pro 2020.  The file opens fine, but keeps closing unexpectedly, since reinstalling on new computer.  (previously on Windows 10).  It was updated as soon as I installed it.  Haven't tried the sample file yet.
