Beginning balance off after changing class on previously reconciled transactions.

Beginning balance off after viewing and/or changing class on previously reconciled transactions. Amount was not changed - only class. Type for all transactions is "reconciled in register".  All transactions have "R" in check column. No amounts in "Reconciled Amount" column. "Difference" = original amount of transaction. Switched from Desktop to QB Online last June.  All transactions are from before changeover, so I suspect it's related to the conversion. How do I fix?

Hi, @TSS1911.

Thank you for sharing the details of what happened to your reconciled transactions. Let me help figure out why your beginning balance is off.

Let's try viewing your reconciliation report so we can check what happened to your previous reconciled transactions. The root cause can be fixed without undoing a reconcile. You can refer to this article for more details: Troubleshoot a reconcile when the opening balance is correct.

Please keep me updated on how it goes. I'll be around to help you further in correcting your beginning balance.

Changing class has nothing to do with the bank reconciliation. The warning the system gives you when you do that is misleading.  The only things that will affect the reconciliation is changing the amount or the date to one after the closing date

Did you ever find the solution to this? I have the same problem.

Changing class on reconciled transactions won't affect the beginning balance, Meredith8.

You'll want to review all the transactions to check on your previous reconciled ones. If your beginning balance doesn't match your bank statement, these might be the cause:

  • Someone edited, deleted, moved, or unreconciled a transaction that was on a previous reconciliation. This changes the ending balance and impacts the beginning balance on your next reconciliation.
  • Someone manually reconciled a transaction. It won't show up for review and can't be added to future reconciliations.

Check out this article on how to fix it: Fix beginning balance issues in QuickBooks Online.

Let me know if you need further assistance, I'll be more than willing to help.

Hi MaryLurleenM,

Thank you for your response. If I go to start a new reconciliation in the account in question, there is a warning that the account balance is off, with a link to review transactions which have been changed. When I consult this list, there are a number of things that were previously reconciled, and remain reconciled. For each of these, I am able to look at the transaction history, and even restrict what is visible to what has been modified in that transaction. In each of these, the only thing that has been changed is the class (no amounts, accounts, or descriptions). These are the only items in the list to review in order to restore the account balance to its correct amount. I have tried un-reconciling and re-reconciling a couple of them, but this changed nothing. Would you happen to have any other ideas?
