QuickBooks Freezes

QuickBooks freezes when I try to open an old uncleared deposit. I can't revert or cancel.  It is just stuck. How do I prevent that?

If this is the case for a particular deposit only, and others work, the transaction is probably damaged. In this case, Rebuilding the data file may fix it.  Start at File | Utilities | Rebuild Data...

Thanks for becoming part of the Community, Bosley.

When QuickBooks freezes up, there's several possible causes:

  • Your company name may be too long.
  • You may have corruption on your hard drive.
  • You might have a damaged Windows operating system.
  • You may have a damaged or missing QBWUSER.INI file.
  • Program files or the QuickBooks Desktop installation may be damaged.

The first thing you'll want to try is running Quick Fix my Program from the QuickBooks Tool Hub.

Here's how:

  1. Close QuickBooks.
  2. Download a copy of our most recent version (1.4.0.0) of the QuickBooks Tool Hub. Save it somewhat you can easily find it, like your Downloads folder or the Windows desktop area.
  3. Open your QuickBooksToolHub.exe file.
  4. Follow the on-screen steps to install and agree to its terms and conditions.
  5. When your installation finishes, double-click the icon on your desktop to open the program. If you can't find the icon on your desktop, do a search in Windows for "QuickBooks Tool Hub" and select the QuickBooks Tool Hub app.
  6. In the QuickBooks Tool Hub, go to Program Problems.
  7. Click Quick Fix My Program.
  8. Run QuickBooks and open your data file.

If your books are still freezing when trying to open uncleared deposits, you'll want to try running the QuickBooks Install Diagnostic utility from your Tool Hub.

Please don't hesitate to send a reply if there's any questions. Have a wonderful day!

QuickBooks Freezes

@Joshua_21, Thanks for taking the time to join us here in the thread. I'd be happy to take care of your concern and help you get through this so you can access your QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) application.

You can consider suppressing your QuickBooks Desktop application. It's possible that the issue is with your data file or with QuickBooks. To find out, here's how:

  1. Press and hold the Ctrl key, then double-click the QuickBooks Desktop icon.
  2. Please be aware, don't release the Ctrl key until you see the "No Company Open" window unless QuickBooks freezes or gives you an error.
  3. Select a company file, then choose Open.

Additionally, I recommend giving this article a visit to see other available solutions to access QuickBooks Desktop on your computer: QuickBooks Desktop doesn't start or won't open.

In case QuickBooks won't respond or you get an error that says it stopped working, refer to this article for the steps to fix it: Fix issues when QuickBooks has stopped working.

I'm more than willing to help you with this, @Joshua_21. Don't hesitate to get back to me if you need further assistance with this. Take care!
