How do I setup multi-factor authentication? I cannot find the security settings in QuickbBooks Online to register a new device.

Hi thedialoggroup,

QuickBooks Online has a Two-step verification setting that forces Multi-Factor Authentication to a specific step on every log-in attempt.

Here's how to enable it:

  1. Log in to your Intuit Online Account.
  2. Click the Security tab.
  3. Select Turn On to expand the Two-step verification section. You will be prompted to enter a phone number if you initially did not enter it during the setup of your account. Enter the number you want to use to verify the account and select Turn on text message verification.
  4. Choose to receive the one-time pass code by either text message or voice message and select Turn On.
  5. Enter the one-time pass code you received and select Continue.

If you have further concerns, just hit the Reply button anytime.

Hey there, @Roxy13.

The Security tab isn't located in QuickBooks Online, but rather in the Intuit Account Management portal linked in my colleague's response above. Follow the link and those instructions above if you'd like to set up Multi-factor Authentication.

Please keep in touch with me here should you have any additional questions or concerns, I'm always up to talk QuickBooks. Thanks for coming to the Community, best wishes.

How do I setup multi-factor authentication? I cannot find the security settings in QuickbBooks Online to register a new device.

I have tw-step authentication disabled when I go to the account management portal, yet every time I log  in, I get this prompt:

"Enter your verification codeEnter the verification code generated by your Authenticator app.

Enter the 6-digit code"

How do I disable this? It doesn't seem to be anywhere in the documentation.

Hi j13,

Thank you for posting here in the Community. It would be my pleasure to assist you with your concern about the prompt message when logging into your QuickBooks account.

I've checked here, and we currently have an ongoing issue with the two-step verification status. Since you've already tried to disable it through the account management portal, I recommend performing some basic troubleshooting.

You can try switching to a different supported browser to determine if the problem is system or browser related. If you're still getting the prompt, I recommend contacting our Support Specialists this time.

One of them will be able to add you to the investigation number INV-31576. Once you're on the list of affected users, you'll be able to receive updates via Email regarding the status.

Here's how you can reach them:

  1. Log into your QuickBooks account.
  2. Click the Help option.
  3. Click Contact us.

Please keep in touch with me here for all of your QuickBooks questions, such as the multi-factor authentication. The Community is always up to lend a hand.

How do I setup multi-factor authentication? I cannot find the security settings in QuickbBooks Online to register a new device.

My Intuit Online account shows 2FA as Turned Off, yet I continuously get prompted to enter a code that is texted to me - every time I need to log into QBO.  I want this option to be turned OFF.

Hi, can you also allow an option to use an authenticator (like Microsoft authenticator) rather than emailed or texted one time passwords?

Thank you,

Thanks for joining this thread, Sal Singapore.

I understand that you want to integrate QuickBooks Online into third-party software. You'll want to reach out to Microsoft Authenticator's support or to other authenticators you'll want to use so they can assist on how to set it up.

If you want to look for more compatible third-party apps, visit the QuickBooks App Store.

Hi Alex,

Authenticators like Google and Microsoft's are very mainstream now. I used them for services as varied as Dropbox, Amazon, Xero, Adobe and of course Microsoft. May I please suggest that you include an option to allow an authenticator rather than relying only on One Time Passwords?

Thank you,

Sal

Does 2FA work when using Google to log-in?

I have 2FA turned on for my intuit account, but am never able to successfully login via my Google account or the integrated QuickBooks for Google Workspace add-on. I get stuck in an authentication loop on the Intuit sites when trying to do this.

Is it possible to use both?

For security I would like 2FA enabled, but for convenience, I would like to use Google as our SSO.

Hello there, @fbonomo.

I'm here to ensure that this two-step verification issue gets sorted out so you can log in to your account successfully.

Yes, the  two-step verification will work when using your Google login. You'll be able to sign in to your QuickBooks Online through your Google account once it has been integrated. Make sure that the two-step verification with Google Authenticator was turned on.

To do that:

  1. Sign into your Intuit Account and enable two-step verification if you haven't already done so, learn how to turn on two-step verification.
  2. Select Security and then click Edit next to Two-step verification.
  3. Click Turn on Authenticator app and follow the onscreen instructions.

Know that you have to use the Authenticator app to create your verification codes. Get the iPhone version at the App Store or the Android version through Google Play. Google Authenticator isn't available for Windows phones.

To disable Google Authenticator, simply disable the two-step verification feature.

However, if you're using the Authenticator and the problem continues. I recommend contacting our Customer Care Team. They have the necessary tools that can help identify the root cause of this issue.

To reach them:

  1. Click on Help at the top menu bar.
  2. Hit on the Contact Us button.
  3. Enter a brief description of the issue in the What can we help you with? box.
  4. Press on Let's talk.
  5. Select on Get a callback.
  6. Key in your contact details, then tap on Confirm my call.

Lastly, you can always read through this link, which contains details on how the two-step verification feature work in QBO: Learn how to set up or disable two-step verification for your Intuit account.

Keep me posted if you have questions. I'll be around to answer them. Have a great day ahead.

Thank you. I do not see an option to enable an authenticator. Perhaps it only works if you use an google email address? I need to use my work email address for quickbooks which is not part of the google world or gsuite.  Thank you,

Sal

Hi @Sal Singapore,

Thank you for posting here in the Community. I can provide some clarification about the authenticator app.

You can use any email address to set up a Google Authenticator with your QuickBooks account. First, you'll need to generate a new QR code which you can use in the app.

For the option to be visible, please make sure to disable the Two-step verification. The Turn on Authenticator app option should show after turning off the previous security verification.

In case you need the steps, here's how:

  1. Go to: accounts.intuit.com.
  2. Sign in using your Intuit credentials. When prompted to use a code from Authenticator app, select I don't have a code. You'll be guided to request a code via text message.
  3. Select Sign in & security, then Two-step verification.
  4. In the Two-step verification section, select Turn Off. You will then be asked to enter your password to proceed.
  5. Select Turn on Authenticator app to turn it back on.
  6. Follow the next steps to receive a new QR code.
  7. Enter the code to link to your new device, then select Verify and save.

If the option is still unavailable, I recommend you proceed with contacting our QuickBooks Support Team. They'll be able to assist you further with this feature.

Our Customer Support Team is available from 6 AM - 6 PM PT (Monday - Friday) and 6 AM - 3 PM PT (Saturday). You can reach them through these steps:

  1. Click the Help menu at the upper right.
  2. Go to the Search tab.
  3. Choose Contact Us
  4. Enter your specific concern in the What can we help you with? box.
  5. Click Let's talk
  6. Select Get a callback or Start a chat
  7. Enter your contact information.
  8. Choose Confirm my call or Send message.

For additional reference, I've attached a link you can use to learn about the QuickBooks multi-factor authentication: Verify your account with multi-factor authentication.

Drop me a comment below if you have any other questions regarding your account. I'll be happy to help you some more.

Thank you so much. I have enabled my google authenticator on my handphone.  I'm really sorry but I can't see any options relating to the authenticator on the intuit site.  Please see attached, which offers me a choice of text messages or voice calls.

Thank you,

Hi Sal Singapore!

Good to see you again. Let me show you how to properly configure QuickBooks Online and Google Authenticator.

First, sign in to accounts.intuit.com and proceed to the Sign in & security section. Based on your screenshot, your Two-step verification is turned off so we have to turn it on. Select either Text message or Voice call, tap Turn On and enter your password.

Once done, it should look like this:Capture.PNG

Click the green ON button and you'll be routed to the Two-step verification window again. This time, there'll be a Turn on Authenticator app button.Capture.PNG

Click it, choose your type of phone, tap Continue, and you'll see the QR Code that you need to scan using the Google Authenticator app or manually enter the setup key.Capture.PNG

Then, the app will give you a six-digit code labeled "Intuit" that you need to enter in the box provided. Note that you'll need to use the most updated code since the app refreshes every 30 seconds. Once everything is good, click Verify and save.

If you successfully linked the Google Authenticator, this is how it looks like:Capture.PNG

Still can't find the Turn on Authenticator app button? Please perform these steps:

  • Use an incognito window and turn it on from there.
    • Google Chrome: Ctrl Shift + N
    • Safari 11 or newer: ⌘ Shift N
    • Mozilla Firefox: Ctrl Shift P
    • Microsoft Edge: Ctrl Shift P
  • Clear the cache to fix the browser-related errors.
  • Use an up-to-date browser.

I'm hoping you'll be able to set it up this time. I'll be here if you need anything else.
