I have always been able to double click a transaction within a report and it open the actual transaction, so I can look at it. My file is not allowing me to do this.
I don't know if it is a setting, but I am rather annoyed because I have used this all the time in the past. Now I've got added steps involved to drill into the transaction for the info I need.
This happens when this system is using multiple monitors. QB needs to be on the main monitor, for the Drill Down function to work.
Oh: this also happens when someone uses JE, which is hardly ever used, and not used when Name are needed; not for AP, AR, QB Payroll, QB Sales, Sales taxes or QB Inventory. So, when someone makes this mistake, they decide to Go Around the problem by leaving the first line blank. That makes a Second problem = cannot drill into a JE from a report. Two Errors, in reality.
I have an all in one computer, so no dual monitor.
I have inputted checks and bills, but cannot drill into them from a report. I also use an all in one computer, so I don't see how it might think dual monitor.
Hello there, @Mary - APS.
Thanks for posting your concern here in the Community. Allow me to step in for a moment and help make sure that you can open a transaction within a report in QuickBooks Desktop.
@qbteachmt is right. Also, I want to ensure that everything's covered so you can open a transaction within a report, may I know what specific report you're referring to? You can leave a comment below to add more details. This will help me provide the best resolution for your concern.
I'm looking forward to your response, @Mary - APS. Take care and have a good one.
This worked for me. Thank you!
I am having trouble opening a report in Desktop Pro 2020. I initially had a problem in the 2016 version and QB told me it was because i needed to upgrade. Now I am sitting here with a $300 upgrade and the same problem.
What worked?
Thanks for following on this thread, @A1231.
I have a few troubleshooting steps you can try to help open the report. First, download the latest release, as this will help ensure proper performance and functionality.
Next, open the company file and then run a report. If you continue to get the same result, access the sample file to check if the issue is with the company file or the program itself.
Here’s how:
If none of these steps work, repairing QuickBooks can help fix unexpected behaviors when using the desktop program. Follow the recommended steps in the Repair your QuickBooks Desktop for Windows article.
Stay in touch if you have any questions or need further assistance working in QuickBooks. I’ll be right here to help you. Have a good one.
Thank you, this was driving me insane trying to figure it out.
Unbelievable. Yep. That was my problem. Thank you.
But, why can't QuickBooks behave like any normal app?
The more I learn, the more I think it was written by a tree full of drunk monkeys.
had the same problem - went to main screen, on my mutilate screens - too easy
Requiring the app to be on the main monitor for all of the features to work is a bug. It should get fixed! Is there an open bug on this problem?
This is the normal behavior in QuickBooks Desktop, @mcd23.
It’s not necessary to use the main monitor to make the feature works.
When accessing a feature, the other window opens to the main monitor. This usually happens every time you open them at first. You can move the window to your preferred monitor and click cancel, and then open a feature again. This way, it won’t show up on the separate monitor. However, you’ll need to do this every time you access QuickBooks.
Don’t hesitate to reach out back if you have an additional concern. The Community team is always here to lend a hand.
Incorrect. It sometimes happens that windows open on the main monitor, but the drill down function definitely doesn't work unless the app is moved back to the main monitor. Moving the app back to the primary monitor re-enables the feature. It's a bug that should be fixed properly instead of being brushed aside because there is a workaround.
I have this same issue. I have the most recent version of QB for Mac Desktop, not windows, so it is perhaps a bit different, but I cannot open any item on my reports. I have tried using the sample company file and it will not work there either. Does that mean that I have a bad program? If so, how do I fix it?
Hi there JGM55.
If you've tried the steps listed by my colleague above without success, then I recommend reaching out to our support team, they'll be able to look through your account with you in a private 1-on-1 setting. They can share screens with you and tell you exactly where to click. To reach them, follow these steps:
Open your QuickBooks Desktop to connect with us.

Select your product and fill out the form to chat with an expert.
If you have any other questions. You can post here, anytime. Thank you and have a nice afternoon.
Doesn't work. Told to contact tech, which I did. Nice guy but could not help. Told to post to community and now I am told to go to the tech, which I have already done. Reports will not open by clicking on a transaction. Worked for tech. Is it software, mouse or computer issue that I cannot open them on my end?
Hey again, LGM55.
Thanks for dropping by again. Because you mentioned that you experienced the same issue in a sample company file, that leads me to think there may be an issue in how it was downloaded. So I suggest reinstalling the software. To do that you can visit this link. Following the steps there will help you download the product again.
If you have any other questions or need further assistance, don't hesitate to post here at anytime. Thanks and have a nice Wednesday afternoon.
the "normal" or "expected" behavior is still not a good way of handling the program.
Furthermore I would challenge you on what you are saying.
My system setup is
Lenovo Laptop with 4K screen (#1) , Thunderbold docking station with 2 4k lenovo thinkvision monitors (2 and 3) and HDMI from laptop to Sony 4K 65" TV, (4)
All four screens are set to extend to this screen so in windows i show 4 monitors
all four monitors are set to 3820x2160
if i open qb on laptop screen i can see report details, if i move the whole app to the tv screen i can see report details, but if i move it to either monitor 2 or 3 i cannot. So It is not that report must be openned on main screen. Honesty I am a little frustrated as I just replace screen 2 and 3 think the issue was because main display was 4 K and screen 2 and 3 were not, their max resolution was 2560x1440, so i just wasted a grand on some really nice monitors that did not solve my issue.
Intuit QuickBooks you need to fix this and you also need to fix your dependency on IE. I hate having an app on my PC that Microsoft no longer updates for security.
here is something I just found that is weird to me.
My laptop with 3 external displays (4 total) , when set with the built-in display as the "make this my main display" check box checked, I can open quickbooks and display report zoom in details only on that screen or screen 4, but if I set monitor 2 as main, then i can open zoom details on all 4 monitors. (all 4 displays are 4k 3840x2160
hope that helps yall as i need to have quickbooks not on the laptop screen.
Well its now November 2020 - I've read all your replies. Since this is STILL a problem after 2 years???? Really Quickbooks.
It does seem to be which monitor you are on. However, this problem, of not being able to click on a figure is ridiculous that you have to be on a certain monitor. I am in a CPA firm and normally have more than one client open at a time. I do not think having to switch monitors is an answer in this day in age. Quickbooks needs to correct this issue ASAP. It is costing everyone time and money.
Is this something quickbooks plans to fix with a new release? I use a laptop so I can easily take it to clients offices, but it only has a 15 inch display. When at home or in my office I have two additional 26 inch displays. This allows me to be much more productive. QuickBooks' (lack of) functionalty on second or third displays is very limiting! No other program I am aware of limits functionality on my second or third displays like this.
I have Desktop for Mac. I have one computer, Ever since I updated to 2020 I have been unable to open any transactions on a report, nor open a check from the check register. This is extremely annoying and time consuming. If there is a fix, please let me know as I am beyond frustrated. (I also cannot open a register from the drop down. I have to highlight it and then go back up to the drop down a second time and his "open register" again. Maddening.
