QuickBooks Desktop Point of Sale discontinuation

by Intuit•1• Updated a day ago

We introduced QuickBooks Desktop Point of Sale over 20 years ago to help retailers manage their stores. The platform it runs on is unique, so it's difficult to maintain and add new features.

On October 3, 2023, we discontinued QuickBooks Desktop Point of Sale 19.0 and the following connected services:

  • QuickBooks Point of Sale Payments
  • QuickBooks Point of Sale Gift Card Service
  • Mobile Sync
  • Intuit Store Exchange
  • Webgility ecommerce integration
  • Live support (phone, email, and chat)
  • Vendor Lookup Service

You can keep using QuickBooks Desktop Point of Sale 19.0 without these services after October 3, 2023. Discontinued products don't receive critical security patches or feature updates, so we recommend switching to one of the Point of Sale solutions below.

Switch to a mobile POS app

The QuickBooks mobile app allows you to accept invoice and new sale payments on the go and automatically sync transactions to QuickBooks. With Tap to Pay on iPhone, you can turn your phone into a powerful card reader so you don’t need to carry an extra device. Easily manage your team by inviting unlimited users to GoPayment while controlling access to sensitive business data. This is ideal for businesses that need to get paid anywhere and manage simple inventory.

Key features

  • Sync every transaction to QuickBooks Online automatically
  • Accept payments with Tap to Pay on iPhone or a Bluetooth card reader
  • Create an invoice or sale and collect payment on the spot
  • Send receipts by text or email
  • Create and manage customers, products, and services
  • Accept tips and apply discounts
  • View sales and cash flow reports
  • Invite unlimited team members and control access to sensitive data

Discontinuation FAQs

No. Existing QuickBooks Point of Sale 19.0 customers could buy additional users on existing licenses and hardware until October 3, 2023.

Yes. Use the migration workflow in the QuickBooks Desktop Connector app to import your customer, vendor, and item lists into Shopify.

No. The Tetra Lane 5000 PIN Pad you bought from Intuit was configured exclusively for use with QuickBooks Desktop Point of Sale and QuickBooks Payments. Since QuickBooks Payments isn't available for Point of Sale anymore, the PIN Pad no longer works.

No. QuickBooks Point of Sale Gift Card Service was discontinued on October 3, 2023. You can still manually redeem a gift card in QuickBooks Point of Sale, but the system can't manage the balance. Use the Gift Card report to confirm the available balance on a gift card.

Voice authorizations are offline transactions that try to settle through QuickBooks Payments when Point of Sale launches. Since QuickBooks Payments is no longer available for Point of Sale, those settlement attempts fail. For steps to resolve this, see "Fix 'Voice authorizations failed' errors in QuickBooks Point of Sale."

It's free to use the QuickBooks Desktop Connector app to move your data to Shopify and to integrate Shopify with QuickBooks Desktop financial software.

The following data moves from QuickBooks Point of Sale to Shopify through the QuickBooks Desktop Connector app

  • Products (including inventory quantities at each location).
  • Customers, and vendor data.
  • Customer notes.

The following data doesn’t move directly.

  • Customer balances.
  • Product images. These must be exported manually from QuickBooks Point of Sale, then imported into Shopify with an app like Photo Finish.
  • Transactional or non-transactional records like sales receipts, receiving vouchers, purchase orders, or sales orders. Use QuickBooks Point of Sale software to view your past transactions and customer history.

How you handle special discounts in Shopify depends on how they were set up in QuickBooks Point of Sale — you might recreate them manually on each order, use standardized discount codes for customer groups, or use third-party apps for more complex discounting.

Using Shopify with QuickBooks

The QuickBooks Desktop Connector app supports QuickBooks Desktop Pro Plus, Premier Plus, and Enterprise — versions 2021, 2022, and 2023 (Enterprise 21.0, 22.0, and 23.0).
