Question

important re chart of accounts

It would be SUPER Useful if you allow

Is there a way to reorder the Accounts in my Chart of Accounts in Quickbooks Online? (i.e., so that I can group my bank and credit card accounts together at the top)

Digging for them alphabetically seems really Elementary school. I want my active Accounts at the top. Thank you

There isn't a direct way to manually group your active bank and credit card accounts at the top of your Chart of Accounts page. However, you can assign numbers to them so you can easily sort and track them.

To do this, enable account numbers in your settings first:

  1. Click the Gear icon in the top right and select Account and settings.

  2. Click the Advanced tab on the left menu.

  3. Scroll down to the Chart of accounts section and turn on Enable account numbers.

  4. Check the box for Show account numbers.

  5. Click Save.

Next, return to your Chart of accounts to assign numbers:

  1. Go to Accounting and select Chart of accounts.

  2. Select Edit mode to enter the numbers.
Note: While you can use any numbering system, following Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) is recommended for consistency.

  3. Click Save.

Once completed, click the Number column header to sort your list in ascending order and verify that your accounts are displaying correctly.

Also, you may want to hide your inactive accounts to keep your active ones front and center. Here’s how:

  1. In your Chart of accounts page, click the Gear icon.
  2. Scroll down to Preferences section.
  3. Uncheck the box for Show inactive accounts.

Once unchecked, you can then focus on viewing your active accounts only.
