New subscription costs for 2026

It’s completely understandable to feel a bit of sticker shock at those new subscription costs, especially when you're using the software for personal files in retirement. I'd be happy to clarify how the subscription works so you can plan the best path forward for your data.

QuickBooks Desktop 2024 is a subscription-only product. This is different from the 2021 version and older versions, which were one-time purchases you could use forever. Because the 2024 version is tied to a subscription, you won't be able to keep using the software to manage your files once that subscription ends.

If you decide not to renew in 2026, here is what will happen, your software will switch to a read-only mode. You'll be able to see your data, but you won't be able to change anything or add new information. This view-only access usually lasts for one year after the subscription expires. After that, you may be locked out of the software entirely.

Since you want to keep your personal records safe, I recommend running important reports like your Balance Sheet, Profit and Loss, and Transaction Detail for all years. You can export these to Excel so you'll always have your records in a format you can open anytime for free.
