there is no option/choice for "Custom Transaction Numbers!

Currenty sales receipts are numbering sequentially but when I try to reset the starting number it has no effect - so, where do I go from here??

Hello, Donny. I’ll be providing clarification regarding the Custom Transaction Number in the QuickBooks Desktop company file.

Please note that the Custom Transaction Number toggle is exclusive to the QuickBooks Online (QBO) version. In the Desktop version, the system is designed to allow custom numbering by default, which is why that specific preference setting is not visible in the menus. If your sales receipts are stuck on an old sequence and won't reset, it is usually because QuickBooks is anchored to a higher number used elsewhere in your data.

It's important to know that the program determines the next number by looking at the highest number used in your most recent transaction. Since you've already reset the sequential number in your sales receipt and the issue persists, you'll want to look for a ghost transaction that you've accidentally saved with a very high digit. Here's how:

1. Go to the Lists menu and select Chart of Accounts.
2. Double-click your bank account to open the register.
3. Click the Number column header to sort by number.
4. Look for the highest number in the list. If you find a rogue high number, you must either re-number it or delete it to allow the sequence to drop back down.

Moreover, I recommend reviewing your template settings; in QuickBooks Desktop Canada, the 'Number' field is sometimes hidden on the data entry screen, while you can see it on the print forms.
