Question

Check Detail Report

Previously, in Desktop, I had a version of the Check Detail report (memorized report), which included 1) All the checks written that day 2) The Bills those checks were applied to 3) The accounts and Classes charged by those Bills. Each of those 3 details were key aspects to this report. How do I re-create this in Quickbooks online? It’s a vital report, that I use every single week. Previously, I could run it with just two clicks. In the new system, the nearest I’ve been able to figure out is manually cobbling together the “Transaction Detail by Account” and the “Bills & Applied Payments reports”. I can’t figure out how to get either report (or any others) to simply run with each of these necessary pieces of data. Thanks in advance.

You can use the Transaction List with Splits report to show your checks written, the bills they were applied to, and the accounts and classes charged, all in one view.

Here's how to set it up:

  1. In the Transaction list with splits report, click Customize (top right), then under Rows/Columns.
  2. Under Columns, check the boxes for Class, Split, Account, and Vendor.
  3. Scroll to the Filter section, check Transaction Type, and select both Bill and Bill Payment (Check) from the dropdown this ensures the report pulls both the checks written and the bills they were applied to.
  4. Set your date range (e.g., This Week or a specific day) at the top.
  5. Once the data is correct, click Save as (top-right) and name it something like Weekly Check & Bill Detail.

For future reference, you can check this article to guide you on how to download your data from QuickBooks Online: Export your QuickBooks Online data.

Thank you so much for answering my question!

I do have a follow-up for clarification.  When I used to run this as a version Check Detail report in Desktop; I could set the date for the day I wrote the checks & it would show all the bills that I paid that day, regardless of the Bill date.  With this report, it seems like it will show all transactions within the period, regardless of when paid.

So, for instance, I entered Bills each day during the week of 6/29-7/2. Some I paid on 6/30; some I paid on 7/2.  With Desktop, I could run the Check Detail for 7/2; and see all the Bill (6/29-7/2) paid on 7/2. This Check Detail report in Desktop would exclude what I paid on 6/30.   With this new system & report, it seems like I only have the option either to include all transactions for the whole week, whether paid 6/30 or 7/2 (setting the date range for the week.); or if I set the date for just 7/2, to only include Bills entered 7/2; excluding the Bills entered 6/29-7/1, that were paid on 7/2.

Is that correct? Is there a way to base the inclusion/exclude on the Check Date, rather than the transaction date(s)?

You are correct. However, you can change it so that QuickBooks evaluates the inclusion based on the check date rather than the bill date by customizing the report.

You must run a report built around the bank or payment side rather than the expense side to force QBO to look only at the Check Date / Payment Date.

Here’s how:

  1. Go to Reports on the left menu panel.
  2. In the search bar, type and select Check Detail.
  3. Change the Report period dropdown to Custom.
  4. Set both the Start Date and End Date to your specific payment date (e.g., 07/02/2026).
  5. Click Run report.

Thanks - I’m still having a bit of trouble though:

Option 1 (Transaction w/Splits) - Doesn’t evaluate inclusion based on the check dates, which is what I need. And everything is listed 4 times. It’s more like a GL detail that a report that clearly shows what I paid & which accounts/classes I used. I see what it’s doing, but it’s a cluttered way to try to present to my supervisor a record of what I paid.

Option 2 - The Check Detail report is what I used to use...But how do I include the Class and Accounts now?  I think if I could just figure out how to add those columns (but they are grayed out on the Customize menu), I have my old report back.

Each of your suggestions are somewhat helpful (and I truly appreciate your time). But both leave me with a report that’s less clear, concise and comprehensive to send to my boss.

Isn’t there a way to just add Class and Accounts to the Check Detail?

Currently, QuickBooks Online does not allow you to add Class and Account columns to the Check Detail report. The best alternative to meet your needs is the Transaction Detail by Account report, which supports both Class and Account columns and can be filtered to show only your payment date.

Here's how to set it up:

  1. Go to Reports and select Transaction Detail by Account.
  2. Select Customize.
  3. Under Rows/Columns, select Change columns and add Class and Account (these will be available here).
  4. Under Filter, set Transaction Type to Bill Payment (Check).
  5. Set the Report period to Custom and enter your specific payment date (e.g., 07/02/2026) for both start and end dates.
  6. Click Run report. Select Save customization so you can reuse it anytime.

This will generate only the bills paid on that specific check date, along with the accounts and classes used, giving you the clean, concise view you need.
