Quickbooks Multi User Not Connecting

Our multi user platform was working...and now it is not functioning.  The Admin system is operational, but the secondary multi-user is unable to open the company file.  We are getting an error.

No company file is available (screen says No Company File Open). When we select "Open or Restore a Company", then "Open a Company File" - upon selecting the appropriate file in the designated path (data source name file).qbw - we receive the error code -6150 -1006 (We're sorry, but Quickbooks cannot open your company file).

We have run the Quickbooks Desktop File Doctor on both PC's and no issues are found.  Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the Community, SouthernReins.

I appreciate you bringing this issue to my attention. Allow me to help you further, so that the secondary user can open the company file.

Since you've already tried some basic steps to resolve this by running the QuickBooks Desktop File Doctor, I recommend a few solutions for this issue. Let's make sure both the programs on the Admin and secondary systems are updated to the latest release.

Before doing so, make sure to create a backup copy of your company file.

Here's an article with step-by-step instructions on how to fix the error: Resolve Problems Opening QuickBooks Desktop or your Company File.

The secondary user should be able to open the company file. Keep me posted on how things go. I want to make sure this matter gets resolved.

Hi Jane, unfortunately that did not work. We received a call from Quickbooks Pro Help and they looked at our system and said the file is corrupt.  The system is working but there is an issue with our file.  Our system is not getting recommended updates, etc.  We do not have the support platform, so they wanted us to pay more than $800/year for an annual support package, or almost $500 for a one time fix. Any recommendations?  We are a nonprofit and don't have any discretionary funds to fix this problem.

Are you being scammed? Intuit almost never calls out. There are scam operators and fake support phone numbers all over this forum - watch out!
If you can open the file from any computer and it passes the "verify" test then it is NOT a file corruption problem.

No way to diagnose network problems verbally but ive had several.

Windows updates on either machine can sometimes cause the saved connections to be lost, or stop functioning. Can be due to network driver changes, or antivirus changes or windows system changes. The fix is usually to start over with network setup on all machines.  I also find that the QB connections are more reliable when all the connected machines are on the same version of the same OS.

Don't overlook physical problems: cables that have been run over by a chair or have loosened in the socket can stop working even if they appear to be plugged in.

Welcome back to our forums, @SouthernReins,

I appreciate you sharing additional details about your issue.  Allow me to step in for a moment and share additional information about the Multi-user system in QuickBooks Desktop.

Your QuickBooks software is designed to work with specific system requirements to ensure compatibility, and prevent system related issues when you start using the program. You might want to check these articles to know more about the specifications of the product you're using:

Since you're getting issue opening the file on your work station, let's try disabling the QBCF Monitor Service on the affected PC. Follow the steps below:

To end the QBCFMonitorService.exe process.

  1. Open the Task Manager by pressing Ctrl+Shift+Delete on your keyboard.
  2. Go to the Processes tab and choose the Image Name header to sort the list alphabetically.
  3. Select QBCFMonitorService.exe. and hit End Process.
  4. Click Yes.

To prevent QBCF Monitor service from re-starting on the workstation.

  1. Press Windows+R to open the Run window.
  2. Keyin services.msc and hit OK.
  3. Find and double click QBCFMonitorService to open the Properties.
  4. Choose Disabled as Startup type.
  5. Press Apply then OK.

If you get the same issue, I'd recommend trying Solution 2 of this article: Unrecoverable Error when opening a QuickBooks Desktop file on a workstation
