FORCED subscriptions?

Hello there, Dr725.

I understand how it feels when a product no longer performs as expected. I'm here to share information about outdated products and help you with this.

Microsoft has released Windows 10, and the previous version of the Windows platform is being phased out. QuickBooks Desktop 2014 is compatible with Windows 8.1, Windows 7, and Windows Server 2003 computers. If you have Windows 10 installed, QB 2014 will no longer work due to the system requirements.

As a result, you'll have the opportunity to upgrade to the latest version of QuickBooks to continue working with it. If you want to keep using QB 2014, you can reinstall it in compatibility mode. This may not guarantee to work on your end, but it has been reported to work for other users. I'll show you how to do it.

  1. Download QuickBooks Desktop 2014 from the website: Downloads & Updates. Select the standard setup to select your QuickBooks version.
  2. Save it on your local drive.
  3. Once done, right-click on the setup file of the software and choose Properties.
  4. Click the Compatibility tab.
  5. Place a checkmark next to Run this program in Compatibility mode, then select Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 from the dropdown list.
  6. Let the installation finish and then check the functionality.

Take note that QB 2014 is no longer a supported version, access to add-on services such as Live Support, Online Banking, Payroll Services, Online Backup, and other services is unavailable.

I've also included this article to learn more about the QuickBooks Desktop version that works with Windows 10: Which Windows 10 version works best for QuickBooks Desktop?.

In addition, you can visit this link in case you need to find your License and Product Number: Locate Your License or Product Number.

Don't hesitate to post a reply on this thread if you have further questions about the QuickBooks products. I'll get back to you with more details.

This is NOT true.  I had a client that was forced to pay $2K to get into their 2017 desktop version that they ONLY use for historical purposes.  They don't need updates... they just need to look at the data THAT THEY OWN!!!  Forcing to pay for updates or maintenance just so you can look at the data you own is illegal and this practice needs to be stopped!!!

Who told your client to pay $2000? I am not sure it was a legit support. You can utilize the trial license of QB Desktop if required. Contact us in private for assistance.

It was Intuit support.  I'm in IT and I have the correct Intuit number.

Was looking to update my impervious ver of QB yesterday and to my dismay  after a hour on support sales chat (that is just horrible --->support chat for sales) So,yes it looks like intuit is gotten greedy, and now holding the loyal customers feet to the fire!  As a long time very loyal user  I am livid they would choose to pull this  underhanded horse manure on us good folks. What happened Intuit?  CEO needs a new Mega Yacht and  G-6?

I have a 2018 desktop version.  Yes, they are forced subscriptions, and to add on, they tried to charge my CC on file to renew/upgrade without my authorization, than sent me a threatening email, that I was cut off, which I already knew I was.   Thought it was a scam, but it looks really legit.

Is QB hurting that much?  They have to resort  to these measures?  Hmmmm.

@oakman2000

Who are "they"? Your QBD 2018 is outdated since last year and I'm not sure Intuit will send another email recently to "force" upgrade your license.

I fired up a version of quicken from ~1994, one of my first purchases because of a professor recommendation at university. IT STILL DOWNLOADS BANK DATA.

Intuit keeps saying how this is just "outdated", but they never come clean and admit they hacked customer's programs in order to force a yearly subscription (now you rent instead of buy).

I am just finishing my 2021 taxes, and have moved on from intuit. It was a ton of work, and extra expense, but it was worth it to say farewell to this company, which bears no resemblance to the company that I actually had brand loyalty to...

So yes, these are the tactics they have sunk to, because they have alienated a good percentage of their client base trying to milk us for funds on a yearly basis.

Again...intuit...build a new program with better features, and we'll buy it. Forcing us to pay yearly....for the same program...isn't a long term business strategy, and I honestly hope you fail.

What did you switch to? I dont even know what's available that's not saas/subscrition anymore. I'm looking into gnucash but it's got a long way to go imo.

I ended up just cobbling together a few spreadsheets. Unfortunately it's so convoluted that it's not even something I can share the template with, as you literally have to be the person who made it, to use it :(

My accountant was annoyed, but I couldn't care less. It's one thing to offer a rental subscription for software, but entirely another thing to go in and disable software that was already purchased. I honestly hope that intuit just goes out of business because of their horrific anti-customer attitude. I've read through the replies from the "quickbook officials" in this thread, and it's blatantly obvious that they are well aware of what the company is doing, and as well, they have NO intention of every improving or innovating the product in the future, I mean, why would they, you HAVE to pay them yearly just to use your own software.  I'm still using a copy of (I think) Office 97, because M$ went to the rent-to-use platform even before intuit. I'm just done with companies TELLING me how to use the products that they want me to pay THEM for.   Same thing for any other financial software. Why go to the $$ and time to learn anything else, when that company may well try gouging customers like intuit did. Hell I'll go back to green ledger paper if I have to. Imagine 3M trying to rent you a stack of paper with a yearly subscription. Customers must step up and say ENOUGH until companies remember that they are nothing without our income.

Class Action Lawsuit? I've purchased QB Pro 2013, 2016, 2019 and all because my bank feeds would not work unless I upgraded. Now I have to purchase 2022 which is an ANNUAL SUBSCRIPTION of 549.99 so bank feeds would work.

Had to do the same. Besides the bank feeds, they shut down the email capabilities for the software. So the two most important communications to the QB software I've been buying since 1999 won't work and any work arounds would require me hours of my time. This is how QB knew they would force you to upgrade. I was complaining when they were pulling it on 2016 and 2019. At least with 2016, I felt like I was getting something more from the prior version since the graphics and some functions changed. My upgrade from 2019 to 2022 didn't change anything. Graphics, function, navigation are all exactly the same. I only gained back the ability to communicate with the bank and email invoices (through my server) to clients.

Wish some would come up with a hack to unlock all the software I bought in the past with QB. I bet I've spent thousands with this monkey business.

This is what recently happened to me. My 2019 desktop version was disabled. I use it for invoicing and payment documenting only. I can't believe that quickbooks had access to do this on my personal computer. Is there a legal action going on to address this breach? I can't tell you how stressful this was. I have a desktop version. I did not realize they had access to my personal computer What else on my computer did they have access to? Someone please let me know what is going on regarding this issue.

What do you mean with "disabled"? Can you access your CAMPS as the Primary Contact and find your license there?

FORCED subscriptions?

Hi there, @10894th. Let me provide insights about your QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) subscription.

I want you to know that QuickBooks or Intuit don't have any access to your personal computer or data.

The version (QBDT 2019) you're using was discontinued on May 31, 2022. We don't disable the product. QuickBooks will continue to work for you. However, you can no longer access the add-on services and subscribe to live technical support. Unsupported versions won't receive the latest security patches and updates.

For more details about the service discontinuation, open this link: QuickBooks Desktop service discontinuation policy.

If you wish to enjoy the latest features and add-on services, you may upgrade to the QuickBooks Desktop version that's right for you and your business.

Please feel free to post again if you have any additional questions with QuickBooks. I always have your back. Keep safe!

Yes, I have been using QuickBooks for 20 years and I am parachuting out. The new subscription rate of $550 a year is more than my small business can afford. I am speechless. This is like the mafia. Hostagetaking and theft.

@Dallgal

If you are running a business with revenue <50K USD per annum, you may consider switching to another app with a free plan. You can purchase a 3rd party conversion service if required.

Have you had success with the lawsuit?  As an Attorney, maybe you could start a class action.
