New OT rule crashing the Quickbooks program

I cannot run payroll at all, Quickbooks Enterprise Desktop keeps crashing because of the OT Rule questions that keep popping up.  You answer the questions and then QB crashes and will not let me run my payroll!!!

You have to make sure you are in Single user when updating.  This worked for us this morning.

In Single-User mode, go to Update QuickBooks (in the help menu). Check "Reset Update" and click "Get Updates." Once it is finished, close QuickBooks. Restart (right click, "run as administrator"). Select Pay Employees; you will go through the Overtime setup again, click Finish.

This should do the trick. Feel free to reach back out if those steps don't work for you. Hope you all have an amazing day and holiday coming up!

This isn't a fix but a possible work around.  Sign into single user mode.  We were able to process payroll with no issues in Single User mode.

Same problem here, except that we have five different companies on Quickbooks and only one of them is crashing due to the new OT rule notice.

Thanks for getting in touch with the Community, smileen and Mike122225.

While working in QuickBooks, you could encounter a crash with or without an error message.

The errors you may see:

  • QuickBooks has stopped working
  • No error (QuickBooks just disappears while working)
  • Unrecoverable Error (random codes)

These may be caused by issues on the computer itself, or by how QuickBooks interacts with your system. Initially, I'd recommend confirming your books are up-to-date with their latest release.

Here's how:

  1. In the top menu bar, go to Help, then Update QuickBooks Desktop.
  2. Click Update Now.
  3. Select Get Updates.
  4. Close and reopen QuickBooks to install the update again.

Since this is occurring while trying to run payroll, you'll also want to make sure you're using the latest payroll tax table:

  1. Go to Employees, then Get Payroll Updates.
  2. Select Download Entire Update, then Update.

While reviewing your Get Payroll Updates window, you can check the number next to "You are using tax table version:" to identify which version you're using. You'll be able to find the latest version listed in our Get latest payroll news updates article.

You can also troubleshoot with your Verify utility and QuickBooks Tool Hub.

If the problem continues after going through each troubleshooting process, I'd recommend getting in touch with our Customer Care team. They'll be able to pull up your account in a secure environment, conduct further research with you, and create an investigation ticket if necessary.

I've also included a detailed resource about QuickBooks crashing unexpectedly which may come in handy moving forward: While working, QuickBooks closes unexpectedly with or without an error

Please feel welcome to send a reply if there's any questions. Have a wonderful Monday!
