Quick books 2.1 for DOS

I have been using QB 2.1 for DOS on my Windows 10 PC for years and it has worked perfectly until 1/1/2026.  Now when I try to enter a new transaction it asks for the date to be in mm/dd/yy format even though I use this format.  It refuses to accept any transaction after 12/31/2025.  It seems there is some sort of kill date imbedded in the program.  Is anyone else still using this program? Any thoughts on how to resolve this problem?

The issue where transactions beyond December 31, 2025, cannot be entered stems from limitations in how QuickBooks 2.1 for DOS handles dates, reflecting the restrictions of older DOS-based software.

 

Given that QuickBooks 2.1 for DOS is legacy software, you may consider upgrading to a current and supported version, such as QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise or QuickBooks Online. These updated platforms provide enhanced functionality and improved compatibility.

Thanks for your quick response.  I have looked into updating to a modern version and have even tried one in the past, but I found the DOS version, while no where near as powerful, satisfied my needs of being simple to use and a stand alone program.  I use the project costing function extensively and the DOS version works extremely well for this.

I can appreciate there is some sort of date issue with the program, by why 1/1/2026?  When we went through Y2K, the date entry changed from mm/dd/yyyy to mm/dd'yyyy with no problem.  Now it seems there was a design to limit functionality beyond 12/31/2025.  My hope is there is some sort of work around as with Y2K.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Consider upgrading to a newer QB Desktop with a non-subscription license.

I'm also facing this issue, and I can't seem to figure this out.  I appreciate the sales pitch and "it would just be easier to upgrade", but in all reality it's not easier. This is not a money issue or an ego/pride thing, but I have 2+ decades of transactions backed up on multiple and redundant floppies. I have tried in the past to import my data from 2.1 to 3.0 to 5.0, and so on until getting to QuickBooks 2001 and the number of transactions lost or unrecognized was too extensive to warrant going through everything to correct it. 

 

I appreciate any shred of help regarding this!

You'll be fine as long as you can still run your old QB programs on older Windows OS. Once you need to upgrade your OS to a newer version, upgrading your QB programs becomes inevitable. Are you still using QB Desktop 2001?
