Hello there, kathyemersoncpa.

Thanks for choosing QuickBooks.

There are two plans of QuickBooks Desktop that has a contractor edition. These are the QuickBooks Desktop Premier and Enterprise. You can use any of these to fulfill your business needs.

Please check these links to see the overview of the things you can do:

Also, please check this page for our QuickBooks Desktop products to see its features and pricing.

I'll be here if you have other clarifications. Wishing you all the best!

@kathyemersoncpa

If your client only needs up to 5 users working on the same file at the same time, QBD 2020 Premier edition is enough.  They may purchase the license thru a partner/reseller for a lower cost if required.

What are your thoughts on using QB Online for General Contractors? Does QBO yet have the ability to track payroll by job to then yield profitability by job report?

Hello, @kathyemersoncpa

At this time, the feature to track Job Costing for Payroll in QuickBooks Online is still unavailable. I'll be sure to share this idea with our developers right away. For now, you can visit the QuickBooks Blog to check for new updates and features that we have.

For now, we have this feature using QuickBooks Desktop Payroll. Check this article for more information: Set up job costing and item tracking

I'm always here if you have any other concerns. Take care and have a wonderful day!

You may open a QBO account

then consider having a 3rd party app (e.g field service app, project management app) to get more features.

I currently use QB Premier Contractor Edition 2018.  Since I just learned that  I have to upgrade to Enterprise or Premier Plus 21 will all of my custom reports carry over into the new edition?  I have multiple WIP custom reports in my current edition and can't live/ work without them.

Hey there, @Laura1313.

Thanks for following the thread. I hope you're enjoying the day so far. I'm happy to provide some insight into your reports when upgrading QuickBooks.

Great news, your reports will transfer over to the newer version when you go through the update process. However, to avoid any data damage that can cause the reports to work correctly, I recommend running a verify on the company file before upgrading. When you run a verify, it will scan your company file for any potential data integrity issues. I've included some steps to run a verify below.

Here's how:

  1. From the File menu, click Utilities. Then select Verify Data
  2. The verify will start automatically. Once it's finished it will show a message "No issues with your company file." Click OK
  3. If you see a message that says "It looks like we found some issues with your company file. You can resolve most issues by running a Rebuild." You'll need to hit the Rebuild now option.

Check out Verify and Rebuild Data in QuickBooks Desktop for more details.

Once you're data is clean of data integrity issues, you're good to Update your company file

Please let me know if you have additional questions or concerns. I'll be here every step of the way. You can reach out to the Community at any time. Take care!
