Unreconcile an entire month

I need to unreconcile an entire month. Is there a reason I cannot do this myself? I feel it unnecessary to contact and pay my accountant to do this for me when I own the company. Please advise. Thanks!

How do I unreconcile an entire month in QuickBooks Online myself, without paying an accountant?

Good news: you can unreconcile an entire month yourself, right now, without paying an accountant. As of 2026, the primary admin (which is usually the owner) can undo an entire reconciliation directly in QuickBooks Online, and the In-house accountant role gives the same ability to other users in your company. That's also why some people see an Undo option while others only see Print or View report: the option appears when your role has that access.

If you're the primary admin: undo the whole month at once

  1. Go to All apps, then Accounting, then Reconcile.
  2. Select History by account.
  3. Choose the account and the date range to find the month you want to undo.
  4. In the Action column, select the dropdown, then Undo.
  5. Review the consequences in the confirmation window, select the checkbox to acknowledge them, then select Undo reconciliation.

A few things to know before you do: undoing one month also undoes every reconciliation completed after it, so undo back only as far as you need. It also permanently deletes that reconciliation report and its attachments, so download anything you want to keep first. And it won't revert transactions you reconciled manually in the register; those you'd change by hand.

Not the primary admin? Ask for the In-house accountant role

If someone else in your company needs to do this, an admin can give them the In-house accountant role, which includes the ability to undo completed reconciliations along with full access to bookkeeping tools and financial reports (it doesn't include payroll or admin tasks). To assign it, go to Settings, then Manage users, add the user (or edit an existing one), and choose the role from the Roles dropdown. Details: User roles and access rights in QuickBooks Online and Add and manage users in QuickBooks Online. Once the role is assigned, the steps above work the same way.

One plan note: QuickBooks Online Simple Start includes one billable user, so there isn't an extra seat to assign this role to on that plan; if that's you, the primary admin path above is the way to go. Plan user limits: Learn about usage limits in QuickBooks Online.

Prefer not to change any roles? Use the register

You can still unreconcile a month one transaction at a time. It's tedious for a full month, which is exactly why the options above are worth using, but it works:

  1. Go to All apps, then Accounting, then Chart of accounts.
  2. Find the account, then select View register.
  3. Select a reconciled transaction (it shows an R) to expand it.
  4. In the checkmark column, select the box until it's blank (the status cycles R, then C, then blank).
  5. Select Save, and repeat for each transaction in that month.

Full steps: Undo or remove transactions from reconciliations in QuickBooks Online.

If an accountant is helping you

An accountant working through QuickBooks Online Accountant can also undo the entire reconciliation from their side: Undo a client's entire reconciliation in QuickBooks Online Accountant. The same cautions apply: later reconciliations are undone too, and attachments are deleted, so save copies first.

Before you redo the month

Confirm the beginning balance is correct and resolve any differences first, then reconcile again. Guides: Fix issues with your beginning balance for accounts you've reconciled before and Reconcile an account in QuickBooks Online.

Hope this helps you take back the wheel! You own the company, and this is now something you can handle yourself in a few clicks. If anything trips you up along the way, don't hesitate to reach out.

Unfortunately, only Accountants can "Undo" a Reconciliation in QBO at present.

Sure, but that would be quite cumbersome to do, especially if there were a number of transactions for the period.

I agree, but it's that or get an accountant user to do it (and pay, presumably).

Hi @alanna.

Welcome to the QuickBooks Community. I'll be happy to help you unreconcile an entire month.

Undoing a Reconcile is an accountant only feature, as you stated. The reason for this is so It's not done accidentally. If a user was to accidentally undo a reconcile it could put them back for a lot of work they've put in.

An accountant linked to your QBO account can undo a reconcile in a few steps:

  1. In QuickBooks Online Accountant and signed in as an accountant user, select the client from the drop-down list on the Toolbelt to open the client's company file.
  2. Select the Gear icon on the Toolbar.

  3. Under Tools, select Reconcile.

  4. On the Reconcile an account page, select History by account.
  5. On the History by account page, select the Account and Report period to locate the reconciliation to undo.
  6. From the Action column drop-down list, select Undo.
  7. When prompted to confirm, select Yes.
  8. In the final confirmation window, select Undo.
  9. Select Ok.

Note: Undoing a reconciliation automatically undoes any reconciliations that come after it chronologically, based on the Reconciled On date.

Hello @Emlyn,

As of the moment, the feature to undo an entire reconciliation is only available for all Accountant users using their QuickBooks Online Accountant account.

With this, let's consider manually removing your transactions from reconciliation to undo them. Let me show you how.

  1. Go to Accounting.
  2. Select Chart of Accounts.
  3. Find your bank account from the list of accounts.
  4. Under ACTION, select View register.
  5. Review your bank transaction.
  6. On the Check column, remove the status.
  7. Click Save.

In the same manner, here's an article you can read to learn more about how you can undo a reconciled transaction: Undo and remove transactions from reconciliations in QuickBooks Online.

However, if you still wish to accomplish your goal easily as describe by the suggestions above, let's invite your accountant to access your company data. To do so:

  1. Go to the Gear icon.
  2. Under Your Company, select Manage Users.
  3. Select Accounting firms.
  4. Click Invite.
  5. Enter the name and email address of your accountant.
  6. Click Save.

On top of that, I've also included this reference for a compilation of articles you can use while working with us: Learn the reconcile workflow in QuickBooks.

If there's anything else that I can help you with, please let me know in the comments below. I'll be here to lend a hand.

I was able to unreconcile the entire month by going to the Accounting tab then to Chart of Accounts  then to Reconcile.  Then I just used the arrow next to view report and clicked Undo.  You'll get about 3 confirmation messages and then it will undo the reconciliation for the whole month.
