Question

Bug or Intentional Operation?

Using QBO Essentials.

Problem apparent on all transaction entry screens - can't be sure when the change occurred.

Tested on two different PCs using Google Chrome (with/without Incognito Mode) as well as MS Edge (with/without InPrivate Mode) ... so I know it is not a one-off & is not related to cookies/cache.

Unless I've recently had a stroke & have imagined this, I am sure the previous (correct) operation was this...

New Bill / Expense / Invoice / Cheque - the top left box (Supplier / Customer / Payee) was already active, i.e. the cursor was in there ready to type the name.

Recent (wrong) operation is now...

New Bill / Expense / Invoice / Cheque - the top left box (Supplier / Customer / Payee) is not active, i.e. the box must be clicked before entering the name.

If memory serves this is an HTML focus or autofocus attribute.

Why would this have been removed?

It makes no sense!

Please re-instate the previous operation.  From a data-entry / productivity point of view the new operation is so much slower - it makes QBO an absolute PITA to use.

Why have a keyboard shortcut (ctrl.alt.s) for Save & New when you then have to reach for the mouse to click a box before you can enter anything on the new transaction?

Oh ... & if this wasn't irritating enough, the same applies DOUBLE for the Product/Service & Category columns.  One click - nothing.  One click just highlights the row.  You have to click TWICE before you can type into the Product/Service or Category boxes.

WHY?!

It makes entering transactions into QBO so much slower than it needs to be / used to be.

Please, please, please revert to the old code / operation & stop fiddling with things that aren't broken!

Hello Paul72, Thanks for posting on the Community page, this is the new way of doing it now, we fully appreciate everything you have said and we have passed this all on to the development team.

Thanks for the quick reply @Ashleigh1

At least I know I haven't imagined it.

The question Why? still stands though.

Why would they do this?

Why would they intentionally make the product more difficult to use?

This isn't just a rant.  As someone who's been using QB Desktop & Online for 25 years I am genuinely concerned about the direction of travel.

Instead of focussing on improving the functionality of the product, there seems to be too much tinkering around the edges & actively making the UI/UX worse.

(the hideous new side menu that doesn't show Suppliers by default leaps to mind as a recent example

You are on these forums day-in, day-out trying to help customers fix problems with QBO.  On the other side of your company are people that seem to be actively trying to create problems & I don't understand why.

While entering a batch of Bills at the weekend, I noticed I wasn't having to keep moving from mouse to keyboard.  Lo & behold, this bug seems to have been fixed!

Having made such a fuss about this a couple of weeks ago, I feel I should make a similar fuss about the fix!

Credit where it's due @Ashleigh1 & the development team for getting this fixed - such a simple thing makes a huge difference to the user experience.

It's back again!

I noticed it yesterday afternoon but have had to go through the usual tests (incognito, different browsers, different PCs) to make sure I'm not spouting off about something that actually faulty at my end.

@Ashleigh1 please find out which of the dev's keeps doing this & take away their keyboard!

Surely it's basic quality control - never implement new code if there's even the remotest chance that it's going to break something.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

It is now broke, so please fix it!

Yup, It's back. Obviously some code that was already in the works when we had this "update" reversed six weeks ago has now been installed and the issue is back. I'm another user who's been actively operating one version or another of QuickBooks for 25 years and this is one of the most frustrating things they've ever done!

Has everyone in this forum thread taken a minute to report their dissatisfaction and frustration with this issue in the feedback section of the QBO software? You'll find it in the dropdown box of the settings icon! I don't know if anyone is listening here but maybe if everyone sends the message through feedback it will finally be heard! I'm in a chat with a ProAdvisor CSM right now. They are aware and are supposed to be working on this. I'm asking for more concrete information about what is being done and when we can expect a result.

This is what I wrote in the feedback box:-

This is incredibly frustrating to all actual users of QBO:-

New Bill / Expense / Invoice / Cheque - the top left box (Supplier / Customer / Payee) was always already active, i.e. the cursor was in there ready to type the name.  For the last few months this has NOT been the case, and you have to physically move the mouse to get the curser into the box and then click in order to populate with the name.  When everything is so automated with keyboard usage why on earth was this changed!

Much more professional than what they got from me!!
