when I went to install 2020 it took the license number but said that the product number was invauled.

I rechecked all number and they were correct

I'm here to help fix the product license number issue upon installing QuickBooks Desktop 2020.

 

The license number and product code should match. If you bought the software from our website, look in the purchase confirmation email you received from us. If it's from a retail store, look for the brightly colored sticker on the original CD envelope.

 

If you get the error The validation code is incorrect or This service is temporarily unavailable, you'll want to perform the recommended solutions shown below to resolve this.

 

Solution 1: Check your date and time settings

  1. Close your QuickBooks Desktop.
  2. Right-click the time display on the Windows taskbar, then select Adjust Date/Time.
  3. Check if your date and time settings are correct. If they are, move on to the next solution. If not, continue with the steps 4 to 8.
  4. Select the Date & Time tab, then set the date for the current year.
  5. Select Apply, then OK.
  6. Open your QuickBooks Desktop, then go to Help.
  7. Select Activate QuickBooks, then Begin Activation.
  8. Enter the validation code, then select Next.

Solution 2: Create a new Windows admin

  1. Add a Windows user with admin rights.
  2. After creating the new user, sign out of Windows and sign back in as the new user.
  3. Install and activate your QuickBooks Desktop.

Solution 3: Clean install QuickBooks Desktop

 

If the solutions above didn't fix the problem, perform a clean install of QuickBooks. Rest assured, a clean install won't affect your accounting data since your company file and everything it holds isn't involved at all.

I am installing Quickbooks on a new computer (off of Windows 7)--full version as my older version is no longer being supported.  When entering my license number in the discrete boxes, the program is not accepting the input correctly.  It is automatically tabbing to the next box and spilling over into the product number. (I had the same problem when I tried to load my old program on to my new computer and put my old license number in to upgrade the program).  I'm unclear why this is a problem, and it is preventing my installing the product.  Thank goodness I'm running my computers in tandem until all my programs are transferred over.  I installed a second time using "run as administrator" same problem with incorrect spillover.  .

 

I found an answer online, and will leave this post up.  I was using my number pad and numlock.  I found a post from 2018 advising to turnoff num lock.  Would be nice for Quickbooks to fix this problem.  Most of us using quickbooks depend on the number pad on our keyboards

I agree, using the number pad is convenient when entering numbers. The Num Lock key needs to be enabled to make this possible. Since you've mentioned that its automatically tabbing to the next box, I'd recommend turning off the Scroll Lock key. This will prevent the spilling over into the product number box.

Thanks for this. I understand that using number pad requires the numlock to be turned on.  Mine was. Scroll lock was not turned on.   I turned off my numlock key and used the keyboard keys (ugh!) and that worked fine.  It is possible that using the keyboard row v. numpad, would have worked regardless of numpad toggle.

 

But I'm up and away.  Hopefully this thread will help others.

I have bought the QuickBooks Desktop Pro 2020 version from the retailer.  The disc will not work in my computer (I think it's my disc drive having an issue), but I tried to download the version off of the website.  It is asking me for Licence Number which I have, but it will not accept my Product Number.  I've read the other issues with the other users, but I don't have their issues.  My product number it says is incorrect.  Thank you!

Try download the installer for QBD CA version to make sure. Once it accepted your codes, cancel the installation wizard and claim your refund.

Hey Mary,

 

I'm attempting to install Quickbooks Desktop on my local machine in order to develop a web interface.

 

I've been given the Licence Number and Product Number my boss used to install his version of Quickbooks Desktop, which has an extra User License for me to use. 

 

When I try to install Quickbooks, the Product Number is coming back as incorrect. Keep in mind, this is a fresh install. I've never used Quickbooks on my local machine, so I can't see it being an issue with my previous user settings. 

 

What are your thoughts?

Sorry for the delay on this reply. I was replying to the emails directly (just realized that doesn't work, lol).

 

Anyways, I checked the other suggested work arounds for this issue. Since this is a clean install and I have a new account with Quickbooks, many of those solutions don't apply to my situation.

 

However, I followed the link to look up the license / product number and realized it's based on the owner's email address.

 
As a developer, I have a separate account with Quickbooks than my client does. Meaning the license and product numbers are probably tied into the email address of his account, which is used when he first bought and installed Quickbooks.
 
Would that be a possible source of the issue?
 
If so, does that mean I'd have to log in with his credentials, before I could install Quickbooks on my local machine, under one of his extra user licenses?

Check your CAMPS to find the license code and make sure which QB Desktop version you have to use. You may need other credential to access it.

I have the same issue. I had to wipe my laptop and have attempted to reinstall Dektop Pro 2020. Says product number is incorrect but I havevtriplw-checked against Intuit email. All three toll-free numbers have for QB disconnect after going through all prompts.

The product number should be on a brightly colored sticker on the CD package. Not sure what number was in the email, but let's verify it with the number found directly on the CD covering. The product key and license number are unique for each QuickBooks product. The 2012 product key will not work for your QuickBooks 2020.


As mentioned by @MaryLandT, you can look for the information from the purchase confirmation email. If the software was purchased from a retail store, check the brightly colored sticker on the original CD envelope.


Once you have the information, install QuickBooks on your computer. Perform the recommended steps in these articles.

Hi @MaryLandT , I am getting an Invalid Product Number error when trying to install QB Pro 2021. I am using the license number and product ID number I recently received when I purchased the software. This is to replace my QB Pro 2018 but in trying to do the "clean install" you described I uninstalled that, so now I have no QuickBooks software to run at all. 

 

I tried all the methods you described here but nothing will work. How do I resolve this or get further help?

Hi @BettyJaneB thank you for the reply. Your suggestion is not working for me. Let me explain a bit more fully. 

 

When I purchased the software, I had my QB 2018 Pro software open and I went through the Help>Upgrade links within the software to make the purchase. After payment, I downloaded the software directly. All this was from within the QuickBooks 2018 Pro. But I never received a confirmation email with any of the license information, so when I went to install the software, I used this link https://emaillicense.quickbooks.com/app/qbdt/licensenumber to have it emailed to me.

 

Now when I got to install the software, I am typing the License Number and Product Number EXACTLY as given to me in the email. There is no error on my part in the typing of the numbers, I have done this repeatedly and checked them carefully each time. I still get the red boxes around the Product Numbers and the words appear in red, INCORRECT PRODUCT NUMBER. 

 

I have tried all the solutions offered in the post above: checking my time and date, creating a new administrator account within windows, and uninstalling my old 2018 software to attempt a clean install. None of them work. I have also re-downloaded the software using the link you suggested. It appears to be the exact same identical file as what I had downloaded originally and it also gives me the same error.

 

This is becoming extremely frustrating. Please help, thanks.

In this case, I would recommend reaching out to our Technical Support Team. They can pull up your account and verify the license and product number. Here's how: 

 

  1. Go to this link: Contact Us.
  2. Select QuickBooks Desktop., then click Continue.
  3. Make sure it has the right edition, then type in a short description of your concern.
  4. Click Continue
  5. Select Chat with us or Have us call you

Thanks, I got it resolved on a chat with a rep through my QB 2018 software. For whatever reason, when I purchased the software, I never got an email confirmation with the license info etc. When I requested the information through the online link, the system was sending me the codes for the QB 2013 software I had purchased years ago, but it did not specifically state that. When the rep told me the codes I was using were for 2013 software I looked back at some of my other documentation and it started to click what was happening. Then it was just a matter of figuring out the order number etc to get the correct codes. So it is finally solved.
