Question

QBO Plus - barcode scanner

Hi there, does anyone have experience using QBO Plus with a barcode scanner? I want to use the barcode scanner to add products to an invoice or a sales receipt. I have added an inventory product (using the barcode scanner) via 'Products and Services'. So far so good. The barcode is recognized and the product is added.

Now, when I open a sales receipt or invoice, and scan the barcode of the product QBO does add the correct barcode number but also automatically opens the screen to add a new product to 'Products and Services'. When I close this screen (because the product was already added), the row turns blanc again (in other words; the product is not added to the row of the sales receipt).

Thanks in advance for your advice!

Hi there, @info,

The barcode scanning for inventory management is only available in QuickBooks Desktop.

Let me route you through another forum called Intuit Developers Forum. It's a place where different developers and coders help each other about app development, integrations, and programming. By doing so, they can see how to integrate your barcode scanner with QuickBooks Online.

Here's how to get in touch with them:

  1. Go to this link: https://developer.intuit.com/.
  2. Scroll down, then click Contact us under the Intuit column.
  3. Select your subscription (see selectproduct.png).
  4. Click Ask A Question (see askaquestion.png).
  5. Sign in to your account, then follow on-screen instructions.

I've added this tutorial on the items you add to lists and use on your sales forms: Adding Products and Services, Customers, and Vendors to Lists.

If there's anything else I can help you with, please let me know. I'm always glad to help.

Have there been any updates regarding this issue?

This is a major aspect of our business and we will have to discontinue QBO if there is no solution to this issue.

Hi there, mike0710.

Thanks for bumping up on this thread.

I got your point and see how useful is the barcode scanner in helping you manage your business.

For now, I cannot tell as to when our development team will be releasing an update for the barcode scanner feature in QuickBooks Online. You may consider checking our blog website to keep you up-to-date for the feature release.

Meanwhile, we can look for a third-party application to help use the barcode scanner and add products to a particular transaction within QuickBooks.

If you have more something to ask, please let me know by adding a new post below. Stay safe.

We have an App for invoices creation  in testing stage to do this.  Please email me to give you credentials and do your own testing. It writes invoices online in a platform that reads tehr bar code scanner. This invocie is sync with your QBO.

Idk why it's taking Quickbooks so long to add this feature. Submitted a request for this feature back in 2018. All you'd have to do is add another field to the product info page and make it searchable on the invoice page like SKU's & Product Name are. Would literally take 10-15 minutes to make the code + database changes needed. But they'd rather keep these features "premium" to upsell you a completely different product. I don't want to use Quickbooks Desktop.

Company has acquired an inventory management app. Hopefully this new feature is still available for all QBO regions, including QBO Plus Global versions.

Alright, you're running into a common problem with qbo plus and barcode scanners. It's recognizing the barcode but logging it wrong, so it prompts a new product entry instead of adding it to your sales receipt. Like, it can be tricky. No kidding, right? I've been in meetings where people just throw jargon like it’s candy... anyway, let's get practical. The issue usually lies in how qbo handles barcode inputs when you’re doing sales. One thing to try is looking into your barcode scanner settings. Sometimes, scanners add extra characters or line feeds when scanning, which can accidentally trigger new product windows. Adjust those settings to stop that screen from showing up.

Once, in a similar sitch, bridging a mobile automation layer between the scanner and QBO worked. We used a mobile integration tool acting as a sorta translator. Cleverence could help here since it provides customization and integration without much fuss. Yeah, it's all about ensuring each scanned product goes where it should without extra hassle. So give it a go, and hope it works smoother for ya!
