Hello, premierdog.

We'll encounter this error if the connection with our server was interrupted or corrupted. I have some steps you can perform so we can fix this.

Let's first start by using an incognito window and connect it from there. You can also clear your browser's cache so the system can start fresh. Additionally, make sure that the browser is updated.

If the same thing happens, you can switch to other supported browsers. It could be that the one you're currently working on has a temporary issue with QuickBooks Online.

Leave us a comment below if you have any other concerns or follow-up questions. The Community always has your back. Stay safe!

Nothing has worked and this is so frustrating.  This is something we have been able to do ourselves for a long while.  Now a change...but it back to the way it was.

Hello there, lapoore.

Thanks for letting me know the results of the steps you've taken so far to resolve the Network error when trying to save new employee information.

Allow me to share another way to remove the network error message that you're getting. Here's how:

  1. Select the Reload button or press F5 on your keyboard (Command + R if you're using a Mac) to download the entire page.
  2. If the problem persists, restart your browser and then log in to QuickBooks Online.
  3. If refreshing the browser doesn't work, check if your computer is running any firewall software. If a firewall is present, configure it to allow access for http://accounting.quickbooks.com and https://qbo.intuit.com
  4. If you're still getting the error message, contact a QuickBooks Online customer care representative.

More details about handling network issues can be found in this article: What to do when a network issue error has occurred.

Also, here's an article that includes more details on how you can edit the employee's information: Add or edit an employee in Online Payroll.

Additionally, we have easy-to-access articles, webinars, and video tutorials that will help you in familiarizing the different tasks, features, and functions of QBO. Below are the following:

Get back to me with additional questions while working with payroll or anything about QuickBooks. I'd be more than happy to help. Have a good one.

We are seeing the same issue with existing employees following the intuit payroll migration to quickbooks (not our choice). Our employee data and account was NOT migrated over correctly, our company account is incorrect and we are unable to save any changes to correct our employees withholding data.  I have been on the phone with support for an hour and a half with NO help on this issue. I've been told, there is an "investigation" with NO ETA or update. This is unacceptable. This failure create company files correctly and inability for employeers to correct W4 information is a complete failure of a payroll system. You are preventing us from paying our employees correctly and paying the correct withholding taxes. That is the complete purpose of a payroll system. This is NOT a network issue from the customer side, clearly, as everyone of these customers seeing this has already told you they've changed browers, refreshed, and cleared all their history. Quickbooks needs to prioritize this ASAP or risk losing customers as they are failing to provide the basic functionality of a trustworthy payroll system.

I was able to save the changes by making sure the Legal address and work location address were identical.

THIS!  Thank You!

This worked for me also. THANK YOU!

This is still an issue!  I tried ALL recommended fixes with no luck.  Finally called QBO payroll customer service and they were able to enter the W-4 info on the back end for me.

This is still an issue.  I'm going to call customer support tomorrow (Monday) but I can't add a new employee and get the same error message. I tried all the recommendations in this thread. Nothing has worked. Very frustrating.

I am getting the error and have followed all the suggestions in this thread.  Why is this happening? If I have to contact QB Support every time a new employee is added I'm going back to Desktop.  This is unacceptable.

Hello, jerrisea.

I know how important having this issue fix. I can route you to the best support available so this will be taken care of accordingly.

Currently, our engineering team is already working on fixing this issue. Have you been added to the notification list for this investigation number INV-59268? If no, I'd suggest contacting our Payroll Team to add you to the list of affected users. I'll show you how.

  1. Login to your QuickBooks Online company.
  2. Select the Help (?) at the top right.
  3. Select Talk to a human.
  4. Enter the investigation number, then hit Get help from a human.
  5. Choose a way to connect either Chat or get a Callback

I've included some tips about running payroll in QuickBooks Online: Help on common payroll topics. Here you can find helpful information to complete your payroll tasks.

I struggled with this same issue for months along with notices that employees were missing information when they weren't.  I finally realized that my work location address had the wrong zip code and was not valid.  Double check your work address for each employee and make sure it is valid. You may want to use the USPS validation to make sure.

Also, with Quickbooks Online Payroll Core, you cannot edit or delete work addresses.  You have to go to an individual employee "Employment" tab and under work location select "New Work Location" to add a new one with the corrected address.  Apparently you can contact support directly to have the old invalid address removed.

It would be really nice if Quickbooks had an actual address validation and prevented this from happening.
