I upgraded to QuickBooks Online Advanced because of all the promises of better reporting, especially for job costing. They also promoted one-on-one support to help with the setup. It's been very disappointing. I've spent days with support trying to create the reports we were told were possible, only to find out they don't work the way they were represented. Looking back through the support tickets, they also show a lot of inconsistencies between different support reps. It seems many of them don't fully understand the software's capabilities, which made the whole process even more frustrating. At $220 per month, I just can't justify the cost for the one feature I actually use—the ability to have more than 40 Classes, but now that I've been using it, it will be a lot of work to undo, if I downgrade. Has anyone had any success negotiating a larger discount with Intuit? Now that I've started using the additional Classes feature, downgrading won't be easy, but I also don't think I can j
I cleared a deposit made in April on the April bank req. The item shows as cleared on the reconciliation report but is also showing as uncleared on the same report. It continues to show up on the deposits when I do the bank reconciliation. How do I get rid of it?!
Hi all,I’m not an accountant but I have been tasked with helping a small business transition from sage 50 to QB. My big issue is the company has 2 company files, one for US sales in USD and one for Canadian sales in CAD. It is a Canadian company so the majority of the accounting work is done in the Canadian file. They want it to be multi-currency so that the inventory is combined and it removes the need for end of month conversions. I have progressed so far with importing the canadian chart of accounts, customers and suppliers. I have a Journal entry that was built off of the Canadian trial balance, i broke up the accounts payable and recievable into all the different vendor purchases and customer purchases. I have a few concerns though, I see that on the trial balances it looks like the company has a US accounts recievable (i think this is brought over from the US file and is convered to CAD dollars) and they also have multiple accounts that hold USD but are convered to CAD on the bal

QBO does a lot, but many construction businesses pair it with a dedicated project management or estimating tool. We'd love to know what you're using:• Apps like Buildertrend, Procore, Knowify, CoConstruct, or something else entirely?• What does the app handle that QBO doesn't do natively?• How well does the integration actually work in practice?• And honestly — was the extra cost and setup worth it?Share your setup and any tips for others considering the same route.
Some construction businesses work across both residential and commercial projects — and the two can be quite different in terms of contract terms, billing cycles, tax treatment, and the level of documentation required. If that sounds like your business, how do you keep the two streams separate and reportable in QBO? Are you using Classes to separate residential vs commercial? Different customers/projects? Or do you keep them in separate QBO files altogether?Would love to hear what's working — and whether QBO gives you the visibility you need across both sides of the business.
GST/HST in construction isn't as simple as just adding 13% or 15% to every invoice. There are some real quirks that catch people out:- The holdback: HST doesn't become due on the holdback until it's actually payable, not when the main invoice goes out- New home builds vs renovations: different rules apply- Input Tax Credits (ITCs): are you claiming GST/HST back on all your eligible job costs?- Quebec: dealing with QST on top of GST adds another layerHave any of these caused you problems in QBO? Or have you developed a reliable process you'd like to share? We'd especially love to hear from bookkeepers and accountants who've worked out the best QBO setup for construction HST.
One thing that's easy to let slip in a busy construction business is tracking Workers' Compensation Board (WCB) or WSIB clearance certificates for your subcontractors. In most provinces you need to confirm a sub has a valid clearance letter before you pay them — or you could end up liable for their WCB premiums.Since QBO doesn't have a built-in compliance tracker for this, how are you managing it? Are you using vendor notes in QBO, a spreadsheet, a separate app, or something else?Extra question for anyone in multiple provinces: how do you handle the different WCB bodies (WorkSafeBC, WSIB in Ontario, WCB Alberta, CNESST in Quebec etc.)?
If you're doing construction work in Canada, you'll know all about the holdback — that 10% (or sometimes more) that clients are legally required to hold back under provincial lien legislation until the project is complete and the lien period has passed. The tricky part is reflecting this properly in QBO: the holdback affects your cash flow, it sits on your balance sheet as a receivable, and the HST timing rules around it are different from a regular invoice. How are you handling it? Have you set up a dedicated 'Holdback Receivable' account? Do you use a separate invoice line, a credit note, or something else entirely? Would love to hear what's working — especially if you've found a clean way to handle the HST timing too.

Retention (holding back 5–10% until the job is signed off) is standard practice in construction contracts, but QBO doesn't have a built-in retention feature. That means most of us have had to figure out our own workaround. We'd love to hear how you manage it:- Do you use a separate 'Retention Receivable/Payable' account?- Do you adjust invoices or use credit notes?- How do you make sure the retention shows clearly on your balance sheet? If you've cracked it, please share your setup — it would help a lot of people in the same boat!
I can't find the job profitability report in QuickBooks online
Ineed to find all the journal entries I made in mnth onQB online Essentials
We recently changed our fiscal year-end from March 31st to December 31st in Quickbooks Online. I followed the steps to change the fiscal year-end via "Account and settings > Advanced" for both fiscal year and tax year. I also changed the sales tax reporting periods from March 31st to December 31st for both CRA (GST) and BC Ministry of Finance (PST) via "Edit agency settings". Upon completion of the change, running the following standard reports have resulted in the following outputs: 1. Trial balance (all dates and custom dates) results in the correct account balances;2. Transaction report (all dates and custom dates) results in the correct account balances;3. General ledger (all dates) results in the correct account balances;4. General ledger (custom dates) results in the "Balance" column not agreeing to the trial balance and transaction report. Based on what I have read on the community boards, I can confirm that my transactional data is complete, however, when run
The online version of the app does this. I assume it's supposed to do it cause it would obviously be dumb if it didn't.

A/P Aging in QBO is designed the same as A/R Aging. But I need for Cash flow planning I need to know what is coming up as due. The QBO A/P Report tells me nothing.
This is an intermittent problem, but even if you reset the dates of the report it still doesn't fix it. This never happened in the old "experience" of QBO. Will this be fixed? It is very frustrating, especially during busy tax time.
Is anyone having a problem with the GST going to a Revenu Quebec report when it should go to the Receiver General?
I discovered that my client had under-recorded HST in prior periods. I now need to record this obligation, which is because we neglected to levy it in the first place is entirely the company's obligation. I tried as a JE: Dr. Expense, Cr. HST Collected. However, the Collected figure isn't showing in the HST report. How do I record this in QB? I'm using QB Online - Accountant version.
