how to allow quick books use on a second computer

It's nice to see you here in the Community, @rick170.

That's a great question! I can help walk you through installing QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) on another computer.

To install and use QBDT on your second computer. Here's how:

1. Go to your new PC and install QuickBooks.
2. Once done, go back to the old one and create a backup copy of your company file.
3. Copy the backup file to your new one using a flash drive or other external device or through a network, if they're connected.
4. Then, restore the backup on the new PC.

For your reference, you can also check out this article for more information: Move your company files to another computer.

That should do it! Let me know how it goes by leaving a comment on this thread. I'm only a post away if you have any additional questions about the process. Take care and have a great weekend.

For the QB Desktop program:

Basically you just take the installer CD/file and install it on the next machine and make the appropriate selections from the prompts.  If you dont have the original installer you can download it (if its still a 'current program)

But - you need to be very clear on what you are trying to achieve:

Are you just setting it up so you (single user) have an alternate workstation?

or are you moving from a single user setup to a simultaneous multi-user setup?

Either way both locations have to be on the same LAN - but the setup steps are slightly different.

and you must have the original license key regardless

Hello there, @Billg1.

Allow me to step in and help provide some additional information about installing QuickBooks on a different computer.

You can access the data on desktop and application. However, you'll need to have at least 2-user license to enable the multi-user feature. The multi-user mode in QuickBooks allows multiple users to install and use the same company file at the same time over a server network.

To learn more about the multi-user feature, you can check this article: Set up multi-user network.

Please know that I'm just a post away if you have additional questions about. Have a good day ahead.

Hi @indra2835,

Before we install, you might want to create a backup copy of your company file first. Let me walk you through how.

  1. In your QuickBooks 2016, go to File, Back Up Company, and then Create Local Backup.
  2. Choose Local backup, then Next. Browse the location where you save your backup copy.
  3. Click OK. Then, follow the steps that will guide you through the rest.

After that, let's download and install the software. Here's how:

  1. Go to downloads and updates.
  2. Select your country, product, and version.
  3. Click Download.

Once done, open the program and restore your back up copy. Please see these handy articles for details:

That should do it. Feel free to also check our page about QuickBooks Accountant Desktop for your reference.

If there's anything else you need help with, please reach out to me. I'd be sure to jump in as soon as I can. Thanks for posting and have a great day.

Hi  - I have QB 2016 desktop pro - 1 user.  I have been using QB on my desktop at the office only.  Due to Covid-19, now need to use on the laptop I am using at home.  So I downloaded a copy to my laptop.  But now I am asked to "activate" it.  So I just want to be certain of one thing ... when I go to "activate" it, it won't "deactivate" my office copy, correct?  (I am the only user).

Hello.

We use QB Desktop 2019 for my husband's business for which I am the bookkeeper.  It's set up for 2 users, he and I.

Question:  I would like to download a copy of QB to use for my own side business, so it would be a new company file for a different business.  Can I do that?

Thanks for any instruction on that...

Carol

Greeting, @BookkeeperWytch.

Yes, you can create a second company file for your business without affecting your husband's company file. You just need to enter your business name, industry, and business type to create your company file. I can guide you in doing so.

First, you'd want to secure a copy of your husband's QuickBooks license number and product code. You can now download and install QuickBooks to your device. Here's how:

  1. Download your version of QuickBooks Desktop.
  2. Open the installer file you've downloaded (QuickBooks.exe).
  3. Follow the onscreen instructions.
  4. Accept the software license agreement, then select Next.
  5. Enter your Product and License numbers, then click Next.
  6. Select Express and then Next.
  7. Click Install.
  8. When it finishes, select Open QuickBooks to get started.

Once completed, you can now create your own company file. You can follow the steps below:

  1. From the No Company Open window, select Create a new company
  2. Choose the Express Start button.
  3. Fill in the necessary information.
  4. Click Create company.
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions to finish the setup

Also, you can create multiple company files in one QuickBooks Desktop license. You can refer to this article for more information: Create QuickBooks Desktop Company file: Overview.

I want to ensure that you have the optimum configuration for your business, so please feel free to let me know if you have additional questions. Have a wonderful day.

I appreciate you for joining the thread, @woolydog.

I'm here to share with you some information about the options available on File Explorer.

If you have Windows 10, the My Computer or Computer option is updated to This PC. Thus, you can locate This PC instead. From there, locate your file, to get started and install QuickBooks.

In case you're having a hard time, you can use this link to download QuickBooks Desktop through the website: Downloads & Updates. Then, follow these steps:

  1. Select your region, product, and version.
  2. Click Search.
  3. Tap on the Download button to download QuickBooks.

After that, here's how you can install and activate QuickBooks:

cannot get license number and product number to match up to download on my wife's computer

Thank you for posting here in the Community, Mark9992.

There are different ways to know your QuickBooks license number and product code.

  • If you bought it from a retail store, kindly look for the brightly colored sticker on the original CD envelope.
  • If you bought it from our website, you'd received an email with your purchase confirmation and product details.

Aside from that, you can view it in your QuickBooks by pressing F2 on your keyboard. On the other, you can visit the Customer Account Management Portal Site (CAMPS).

You can read through these articles for more insights: Use the Customer Account Management Portal Site (CAMPS).

You may also check these articles for additional reference on how to download and install QuickBooks Desktop.

Keep me posted if you have any other questions about installing QuickBooks. I'll be always happy to help you. Have a wonderful day!

Cannot get my old computer to move to another computer

Level 9

Hello there, Billy Farrar.

I can see the importance of accessing your data from the old computer. Then, be able to move the information to a new computer.

First, let's make sure to open QuickBooks from the old computer. Open the program from the old device by updating QuickBooks Desktop to the latest release. Then, you can follow the complete steps outlined in this article: What to do if you can't open your company file in QuickBooks Desktop.

Once done, use the migrator tool. You'll need a USB flash drive where we'll store the data. You can follow these steps:

On the old computer:

  1. Go to the File menu, hover over Utilities, and then select Move QuickBooks to another computer.
  2. Select I'm Ready, then create a one-time password.
  3. Follow the instructions to choose the USB flash drive you’ll use. Then wait for the files to be copied.

On the new computer

  1. Insert the USB flash drive and open it. Double-click the file Move_QuickBooks.bat to start the migrator.
  2. Enter the password you created, then select Let's go.
  3. Wait for the Migrator Tool to finish.

You can also check these links for the detailed steps:

Please let me know how it goes. I'll be around if you need further assistance. Take care, Billy Farrar.

I am trying to move my QB Desktop Accountant 2020 from my laptop to my Desktop.

I made a backup of the files on my laptop to my PC, uninstalled the 2020 QBD from my laptop and installed it on the pc.  When I click "Register - Begin Activation", I get a popup window "You will need to update your software to access your Intuit account here".

When I try to find what I am doing wrong, I get the message "Browser not supported - download the latest version".

So I tried reinstalling the 2020 QBD on the laptop.  There also I get the same message.  Can anyone please help me?

Let me help with the error that you're getting with QuickBooks, pam1308.

Since the discontinuation of Internet Explorer last June, QuickBooks has used a built-in browser. This was  specifically designed and customized for all supported versions of the program.

After reinstalling QuickBooks, reset the maintenance release update to install the built-in browser. Here's how:

  1. Go to the Help menu and select Update QuickBooks Desktop.
  2. Proceed to the Update Now.
  3. Check the box for Reset Updates and click Get Updates.

Once the update is complete, restart your computer and go back to QuickBooks. Then, try to activate or register the program to check if that would let you through. Just go back to the Help menu and select Activate QuickBooks Desktop.

Additional details and references are also provided here:

Please reply to me and let me know if you're able to activate and open QuickBooks successfully. You can also post more questions in the Community if you need anything else.

Thank you, JenoP.

Your solution worked.  I was able to update and sign in to my account.

Thank you once again.

I know how to install QuickBooks on another computer, Edward.

Before we start, make sure to prepare your product and license info available. Then, perform the following steps I've outlined below.

  1. Uninstall the existing QuickBooks application before trying a reinstall.
  2. On the computer where you want QuickBooks Desktop installed, download the installation files or insert the CD.
  3. Install QuickBooks Desktop as you normally would.

If you don't have the CD, let's get the installer through the Download and Updates website. Here's how:

  1. Go to the Downloads & Updates page link.
  2. Choose a country, the QuickBooks product, and the version.
  3. Click Search once done.
  4. Hit Download.

Another way of moving QuickBooks to another computer is to use a special tool. This depends on the version you've used. Please refer to this article for the complete steps: Move QuickBooks Desktop using the Migrator Tool

After installing QuickBooks on the new computer, you can restore the company file. This lets you go back to one of your save points when the computer crashes or need to undo recent changes.

I'm still around to answer other questions you may have with the moving QuickBooks to another computer. Drop me a line below so I can help you right away.
