Question

Registering and older product

Hi folks.  Wonder if someone has any advice for a problem I'm having.  Have an older version of QB 2008.  Works perfectly fine for limited use I have with it so don't want to upgrade. Had to move the program to a new computer.  Of course, when I started the program it wanted me to register it.  I provided my License # and Product # but still says registration not successful which can be confirmed with the F2 feature.  Says I have 30 days to use the product.  I don't want to enter any new data into it until resolved so I need to do something quickly.  I tried one of the suggestion from a little over a year ago here where you followed the links in tech support/help to "get phone number" option but that option is no longer available. Anyone know how to resolve this issue so I can move forward and start entering data into it again? Thank you.

You have to contact Support directly to ask the activation code. If they declined to give it, you don't have any option but purchasing a new license.

Hello, Karen. I'm here to guide you on how to contact our Live Support team.

Before we proceed, could you tell me a bit more about why you're contacting support? For instance, are you seeing a specific error message, or is there a particular task you're trying to complete? Sharing those details will help me ensure we get you to the right place.

To protect your data and for security reasons, Intuit requires you to initiate contact directly from the program, allowing them to verify your account securely.

To contact our Live Support Team. Here's how:

  1. Go to Help, then select QuickBooks Desktop Help/Contact Us.
  2. Choose Contact Us.
  3. Enter a brief description of your issue, then continue.
  4. Sign in to your Intuit account, choose Continue, and then Continue with my account.
  5. We'll email you a single-use code. Enter your code and select Continue.
  6. Click Chat with us or Have us call you.

To know the availability of the support, check out this article: "Get help with QuickBooks products and services".

The Community is always here if you have further questions.

Welcome to the Community, Rayvet.

QuickBooks 2008 is a discontinued version of our product. Because of this, you won't be able to register it online. You'll need a validation code to re-register your program. Intuit makes every effort to provide support for registration/licensing, however, successful registrations, providing key codes, etc. can't be guaranteed for older versions.

You'll definitely want to get in touch with our Customer Care Team to discuss this further. They'll be able to pull up your account in a secure environment and go over what options are available.

Here's how you can contact them outside of your books:

  1. Go to our Contact page.
  2. Choose QuickBooks Desktop.
  3. Click Continue as a guest.
  4. Pick your version.
  5. Hit Search for something else.
  6. In the Tell us more about your question: field, enter a description of what you're contacting Intuit about.
  7. Press Search.
  8. Select Start a Message.

Be sure to review their support hours so you'll know when agents are available.

I'll be here to help if there's any other questions. Enjoy the rest of your day!

Thanks for joining this thread, @janet_003.

Because of the 3-year support of all QuickBooks products, you won't be able to register discontinued products online. QuickBooks 2007 is a discontinued version, along with the assisted support. For more in-depth information on the QuickBooks policy, you can refer to this article: Discontinuation policy and upgrade information.

You can contact our Customer Care Support Team to discuss the available options for you. You can follow the steps provided by ZackE on how to contact them. For more details about our support availability, refer to this article: Contact Support

You can read the resources below for additional information about registering QuickBooks Desktop:

Thanks for reaching out. I'll keep an eye out for your response.

You might want to try asking a support person to escalate the issue to a supervisor who can gnenerate a validation code.

Hello there,

I recognize your sentiments about registering your QuickBooks 2007. Allow me to share some information about your concern.

As mentioned by my colleagues above, with the QuickBooks Desktop Service Discontinuation Policy older versions will no longer receive product updates and cannot access online services. Thus, you received the error when registering.

I suggest contacting our Customer Care Support to get a validation code to re-register the program.

Moreover, I'm adding this helpful article as your reference about fixing errors when registering QBDT:  Fix license, validation, and registration errors in QuickBooks Desktop.

Please don't hesitate to return to this post if you have other concerns about registering your QuickBooks Desktop. I'll be here to lend a hand.

I spent 25 minutes on the phone with Quickbooks support and spoke to a supervisor but they WILL NOT provide a validation code.

I tried the steps you provided but nothing worked.

You stated - "I'll be here to lend a hand."

Looking forward to it.

I have a workaround for the moment - but this just isn't right that Quickbooks would do this to us little businesses.

Any solution found for this at all???

You are using an outdated version, You can use the trial version as a workaround.

Same situation with QB 2013, I chatted with customer service, they can´t (or more accurately don´t want to) provide a code. I have been using 2003 for a long time on a (Win XP computer, one day it will fail). So I decided to finally use a 2013 I have had in a drawer for 11 years, installed fine, but it clearly says it will " die" 30 days from now. Intuit is the only company I know that won´t let you use their old software. I will keep using 2003 until I find a solution. As many others here, I have a very limited use for it, I can´t justify upgrading to the monthly service.

So I am having the same issue.  I have used QB 2007 Pro for years as a desktop version.  I only used it for invoicing.  The computer it was installed on had a catastrophic MB failure.  I loaded the the OEM program and entered the license key.  I removed the HD from the computer and used it as a mass storage to retrieve my company file.  It worked fine.  Fast forward two weeks and now the computer is wanting me to register.  Will not allow me to view my file.  I contacted CS and they said they could not validate my copy as it was never registered, which is BS because I used it for years registered.  They were offering every option under the sun.  I explained to them that I did have internet where that particular computer was set up and QB 2007 will not load on a newer computer.  The CS rep kept telling me she was going to email me steps to open the file, again I repeated I do not have internet in this location.  She never even listened and what's more could hardly speak English and kept repeating her script. Lousy CS.  I have done a little research and QB is actually committing offenses against federal consumer law by not allowing me access to my purchased copy of their product.  Considering this has my financial information for my company they are blocking access to my ability to process information on my customers which is a violation of privacy acts.  Just keep after them.

You can consider to purchase a newer version (e.g QB Desktop 2016 or later) to upgrade your data.

So I just went through this nightmare myself - we had an old laptop which we used our 2008 QB pro (3 licenses, btw, but we only have been using it on one computer). The laptop crashed, and we re-installed QB on another computer - a desktop. Anyway, we were getting this same message and I called to register because it could not be done online and met with a brick wall. "So sorry - we no longer support and therefore no longer can register." I found this thread and got my hopes up that I just had an unhelpful rep on the phone and logged in and chatted with Jane M. got another hard stop. After much back and forth in the chat where I even copied and pasted the moderator's replies here (which infer that help is possible), she abruptly cut off the chat. Sorry not sorry - basically! I continued to click through replies in this thread and I came across a link to troubleshoot activation/license issue and found this:

[LINK: Fix activation, license, and product numbers issues]

  1. Go to Help, Manage my license, then Change my license number.
  2. Enter the license number as all 0s.
  3. Don't enter the validation code and then select Finish.
  4. Go to Help, Manage my license, then Change my license number.
  5. Enter your license number. When prompted enter the validation code, and select Finish

I did this and inputting the zeros and closing out (through step 3) bought me another 30 days! LOL, so I figured, I'll just have to go in once a month and input the license and the following month do the zeroes, etc. However, I'm sure there's some limit there also...? Anyway, the point is, I continued with the next two steps and input the license number again, as well as the validation code (which thankfully, we had saved), and it APPEARS to be working just fine. I guess time will tell if the message to register will repopulate (giving us 29 days as of tomorrow)...But for now, I THINK it worked because previously it would prompt the registration mandate every time we opened the program (and not just once a day), but I could be remembering incorrectly. I pray it's resolved, and if it is, I hope this helps someone in the future. I can't imagine there are too many of us clinging to our old software like this but for those us who are - Godspeed!

Thank you Lulaesq

Unfortunately my 2010/11 version does not have the option of Help, Manage my license, then Change my license number

You can purchase QB Desktop 2016 or 2017 to upgrade your version.

5-28-26 I have same issue and have had not success in any installation instructions.  It appears continuously to be Intuit failing to verify license number that has been working fine until I had to re-install on my new Windows 11 computer.  Intuit has given no solutions and they appear to have blocked any others with same issue. I have been a user of QB for 30 + years and used with many clients.  NOW THIS ! ! ! ! ! Unacceptable!  But I still need the issue corrected.
